Fodera Yin-Yang Standard Wait Support Group

Got a chance to take some photos toady before winter truly sets in. ( low 20's so not exactly a nice day)

Here is a family photo of the full house Monarchs flanked by emporers.

Walnut bass in the middle is #21 and the Brazilian Rosewood bass next to it is #34.

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know if there is a YYS for sale in the Mid-Atlantic region (NY, PA, DE, NJ, MD or perhaps OH)? I know someone mentioned Ultimate Basses. Martins Music sounds like a fun road trip, but I can't justify it right now.

Ran into a bit of cash and have been DYING for one of these, but I don't really want to order from Bass Central (or wait), I'd rather pick it up.

I believe I saw #34 still at Glenn Marrazzo's shop, Bass Specialties, in Bensalem PA. I was there last Sunday. Glenn is a great guy, and has some beautiful things hanging on the wall. Link Removed

Thanks for the hint. Jason also let me know that Glenn has one available. I've bought a Lakland 55-02 from him before and love his shop.

The money is definitely here... so... I need to decide if I want to visit Glenn and become owner of YYS #34 later this week, or look at some other higher-end basses!? It would be my first Fodera, and my only for quite some time. So many decisions!

Question for ya'll. There are great photos of the YYS in this thread and elsewhere, but I am wondering what the painted black sections of the body look like, grain-wise? Is the flamed maple used across the top, and does the paint allow for a hint of flame/grain to poke through? Or is it a completely opaque finish?

I was a skeptic about the YYS finish before I saw it in person but was impressed enough once I did see one to buy one. Playability and sound aside, looks matter to most, especially if you're spending about $5K. The paint on mine has a satin finish and there is a subtle "grain" that I think comes from the paint application (almost like really subtle brush strokes). What is interesting is how it is wearing. With a typical Fodera the finish will gloss with wear over time. I'm getting some of that in the slapping area of the black, and when I just shined a flashlight on the paint I noticed that I could see the hint of the maple flame underneath with a dark purplish color. Under normal light from a distance it just looks black with some glossing. So as far as I can tell it is a typical bookmatched maple top.

What has slayed me about Fodera though is the combination of the sound, playability, and the people behind the basses. I played a few NYC basses and wasn't floored. I played the YYS and was. A week from now I'll have another two Foderas at home. So be careful - the standards are a "gateway drug." :D

Bass San Diego has #36 on the wall.

The "brush marks" that Todd (nostatic) alludes to in his post are actually on the surface of the clear coat, NOT in the black itself. The black is applied with a spray gun so there are not brush marks there. However, every Fodera as a completely hand rubbed finish and you will see those faint "streaks" on both a YYS and a YYD...

So far we have no reason to believe that the YYS paint job will be any less durable than on any other of our instruments. There are roughly 10 coats of finish on our instruments. In the case of the YYS, the black is usually the third coat, so there is a lot of clear paint to protect it...

Kindest regards,

J

Finally got it today! :hyper::eek:

It plays like a dream. In the first few hours of playing I am already feeling that it is everything I could have imagined and more. Nostatic was indeed correct when saying this bass takes you places you were previously "scared" to go. It begs you to play more notes and to think outside of the box; self control will be key here so I don't go too overboard in a band setting. The strings feel a bit small but I am giving them a try. Here are a few pictures and off I go to play some more... :bassist:

The pictures don't do it justice, it looks even more phenomenal in person.

Congrats! My advice is forget restraint for awhile and just wank away. Then back off to less notes. I've gone back and forth between the VW strings and 40-100. I think I actually prefer the VW strings but it depends on personal preference and what else you're playing. I switch with my Rob Allen that has relatively thick strings (La Bella nylon tape wounds) but they don't have really high tension so I like the more "bendy" feel of the VWs. You just have to be real careful about technique as you can play sharp just by looking wrong at the note :p. I know that Jason prefers the 40-100, and those do have a bit more traditional feel. What is cool about the YYS is that even with a .95 E string it can sound plenty fat. If you want to lay back just roll onto the P pup. But if you then pan to the bridge - look out.

Hmm, I gotta go 'shed... :D

I am noodling a lot now and officially feel like a 12-year-old in Guitar Center. :p

I am just going to say a few things about the bass after playing it for around 5 hours. It is very aesthetically pleasing and the woodsmanship is top notch; although, this is a given. It is really the little details you notice that make it incredible. I am just going to talk about the bolt-on for a second; I love how it is curved, this really allows my hand the freedom it needs when playing on higher frets. With my Fender Precision it is more of a box shaped bolt-on and really limits your reach for the 19th and 20th frets (and I have pretty big hands/long fingers too).

The intonation of the bass is perfect, absolutely flawless. The bass plays like butter (I cannot think of a better word for it); it is very smooth and plays better than any guitar or bass that I have ever tried.

My only issue currently is how punchy the strings sound, but that's only because they are new strings. I was never really a big fan of the new string sound, so this issue should be gone once I break them in.

In conclusion, I got what I paid for and what I expected from the bass, and more.

Glad to hear that you are loving yours, Kevin. If everything goes right (and I'm not stuck in a meeting all afternoon...), I'll be headed to Bass Specialties to pick up YYS #34 tomorrow!

Very cool. And if you can get out of his shop with just one bass, your wallet will be lucky. :) I may be down there for lessons with Anthony Wellington on Sunday. I'll be happy for you and Glenn that it's no longer hanging on his wall.

Oh, trust me. It's going to be tough to restrain myself today. There's a gorgeous Roscoe LG 5er in trans white that just may follow me out the door too... Although I am also picking up a new Ric from the FS board today.

It's going to be a great day for my GAS, Fodera, and Glenn, but not so hot for my wallet!

I've go the 11:30 slot eith Anthony, although I may need to cancel.
