Two questions: How much mispronunciation is done because the speaker is entertaining themself? How much is because of a sense of pressure to conform to the traits of others?

I've noticed myself speaking in a way consistent with others in one group even though it was different than how I speak around another group.

My old boss used to substitute any Island surname (Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, etc) with ungabunga. Would not even try to pronounce it.

Technically it is. It's first recorded use was in The Taming of the Shrew--and the phrase has appeared in some dictionaries as being legit.

It's just an outmoded way of saying "suddenly", and therefore deserves to be scoured from the English language.
