Meanwhile, at the Indy 500 qualie day one: a single lap at 234.7mph, and the third fastest4 lap average ever. And tomorrow the top 12 get to do it again, and then the top six from that session go yet another time. Jimmie Johnson finally looks in his element (P6), and Romain Grosjean showed up all his more experienced teammates by going P9, good times.
For all the F1 experts out there. Which impacts Lewis Hamilton's pace today more?
1. Increased pace - Constantly having DRS most of the race while overtaking so many cars?
2. Decreased pace - Having to deal with all that extra traffic and overtake all those cars?
Interesting that if you throw out his first lap he was the fastest man on track by far. There was plenty of great action so I understand why, but coming from 19th down to 4th, I don't think they showed him on TV overtaking more than one car all day. Kind of strange he would have the drive of the day and get basically no screen time.

Lewis really turned it on after Leclerc went out. Remarkable how quickly he marched through the field.
Mercedes is rapidly comin' on... and unlike Ferrari and Red Bull, they equipment appears reliable.
Yeah, Leclerc had a heckuva weekend until he didn't. What a classy guy though. Can you imagine the fit Max or Lewis would've thrown if it was them?
I expected George to annoy me this season, but that hasn't been the case so far. That guy's a racer... seems genuine, too.
Sainz might win a race or two this year... but if he does, it will be the car... not him. How many incidents is he gonna have this season? Maybe he'll straighten up, but I bet Ferrari wishes they hadn't extended his contract. I think they're wasting their time with that guy. Ferrari just needs a solid #2 driver that knows he's a #2 driver.
Bottas appeared to be headed for the podium until his tires gave out. That Ferrari motor is great, as long as it's running.
Mick looks like he may be on the hotseat... and I see that. Nice story if he could stay on the path and get to Ferrari, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Good outing for Alpine. Those guys have a quick car. The Sky guys are sure making it sound like Alonso will be gone at the end of the year... and if that's the case, that will be a bummer.

Still an F1 newbie. Really started watching the races sometime early last season.
Starting to understand all the mixed feelings on Monaco. It looks like a really charming event, but the racing was horrible. That one guy (Alonso) is able to derail half a dozen other racers just by going slow seems to be a pretty clear sign that the track is fatally flawed.

The "racing" at Monaco is indeed terrible simply due to the cars being too big for the circuit.
Did you folks see the pre-race footage of Leclerc driving (and then crashing) Lauda's 1973 car? Man, that thing looked like a Malibu Grand Prix racer compared to today's F1 cars.
When the current cars were re-designed, I (and a lotta other folks) wish they were made smaller. Perfect opportunity: missed.
I disagree with the Alonso bashing today at Monaco. The Sky commentators made it seem like he was in front of a huge train of cars, all nose to tail... but this was hardly the case. Lewis was more than a second behind and then fell to 3 or 4 seconds behind... and then there was a another gap to the 9th and 10th place cars. There are a few places at Monaco where a faster car can overtake a slower one. Lewis was frustrated and got mouthy on the radio (wait, let me put on my shocked face) and the British commentating crew instantly took their fellow Brit's side. If a talented guy like Lewis had the faster machine, he could've made the pass... but he didn't... so he couldn't. Just because he's the series' oldest driver and/or is driving for a mid-tier team, does Alonso have to move over anytime someone tries to pass for position? Heck no, he doesn't. Alonso did nothing wrong.

I have nothing against Alonso. But he was definitely driving deliberately slow, not even Latifi is 3 seconds per lap slower. But when the track is so tight, and wet with only one viable racing line, overtaking is almost impossible. I think I only saw one legitimate overtake all day, from Gasly. And that was on a pretty poor opponent that certainly doesn’t have Alonso’s skill. I didn’t see Russell’s overtake, but it sounded like it was fortuitous coming out of the pit lane?
Were there any other real overtakes all day that weren’t related to pit stops or car trouble?
The cars are supposed to be smaller after the next redisgn. Don't know by how much. Engines/power units are supposed to change in 2024.
