I guess only you can really know if you want it, but if you think you might be able to do the spacing, its such a great bass.

As Ed Friedland says in his super-duper closely space Eastwood Sidejack Bass VI (at 1:43), it might feel tight, but hey - (plays fingerstyle) - it's not impossible, you can get used to just about anything.

Certainly narrower than an L2500, yes, but I don't know the exact width. Still debating?

It seems it's a 4 string bridge housing 5 saddles that have been narrowed.
Something like 17*3/4 = 12.75 mm...

Get as much info as you can before doing so. Good news is, even if you do so, ship it to a local GC, and if it doesn't work out, return it to that same GC.

Buying used from GC is about as risk free as you're ever going to get buying used.
If you have it shipped to a local store.
you have 30 days to try it and return it to that store if you don't like it.

I don't know how that works it you have it shipped direct, but the 30 day return policy holds.

30 days is very generous to try something out. Some e bay sellers will go 7 days and even that's unusual.

Used GC is a pretty good source for G&L shopping in general. GC isn't always clear on specifying if a model is Tribute or USA, but they always list a phone number of the store. And it's always a good idea to call and ask a few questions. Definitely ask if the G&L certificate is in the case. When I bought a used L2500 the GC employee I talked to didn't know about the certificates in the case pocket.

L5000 was never a Tribute model. In fact, Tribute series didn't exist until about 10 years after this was discontinued.

I remember shopping for my first G&L SB-1 in a little shop in Fullerton a long time ago. They had one of those L5000's on the floor, but at the time, I loathed 5 string basses.

You're welcome, I'm grateful for the compliment. Though I don't own an L-5000, I like this thread and have it tabbed on my browser permanently with a handful of other TB threads.

The Chicago area L5000 listing was removed, and @Bobby King here on TB actually bought the gold hardware white L5000 from GC.

EDIT: Idiotically, the gold hardware L5000 is still listed as available on the GC used site. I love GC.

Thank you. It was my 51mm bridge width assumption that was wrong, actually.

I have re-measured the distance at the bridge between the E string and the G string - axis to axis, or center to center - on my 1990 ASAT Bass Signature fretless, that is 56.5 mm (same width measured on my 1999 SB-2).
So, the spacing (axis to axis) between each string at the bridge (4 strings, so 3 inter-string spaces) is 56.5 mm / 3 = 18.83 mm, a hair less than 19 mm (this is also the width of one saddle).

I then assume the distance between the B string and the G string on a L-5000 (and L-5500?) bridge is the same as between the E string and the G string on the regular 4-string bridge, i.e. 56.5 mm width for both, axis to axis, or center to center.
Then with 5 strings, we have 4 spaces between the B and the G strings, and with the same bridge width, 56.5 mm / 4 = 14.13 mm spacing, at the bridge...
So 19 x 3 / 4 = 14 mm (rounded).

My 1997 L-2500 Custom has a 68.5 mm string width at the bridge, i.e. 17.13 mm string spacing (= one saddle width).
