There are two different ads in the Asheville CL - one is mine. I had it up for sale, then took it down to get it repaired after talking with Iriegnome. Far lower. They generally fetch $850 at best (EDIT: often lower, I've paid between $650-850 for all five that I've owned). Asking $1000 for one with neck issues is not going to get you a sale.

Is anyone knowing the story about the sickle vs. the pointy headstock?
Releasing a 5-string SB would not be that difficult for G&L, they just need to re-shape the MFD single and split pickups, or the Z pickup, whatever, as well as the pickguard, to 5 strings with normal spacing. A passive fiver is just a big hole in their product list. They already have a bridge, a neck (#10) and a body.
Note that there is strangely a L5K pickguard steel template on sale on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/251743316923 - seller wrongly says it's a 4-string PG). I don't know if G&L (or their provider 'Chandler Pickguards') use these any longer, with modern laser cutting techniques all over nowadays.

However, if you're looking for a G&L 5-string that is 100% passive, you have an option too:
This is the new G&L L1005, only current available through Rocket Music as a limited offering. It's all passive, does a decent P bass impression in series mode, and isn't so pricy. If interested, contact Rocket and they'll give one in 8-12 weeks.

To add clarity to my post, I was thinking of the L series, but what annoys me is that MFD pickups are not single coil, except when a K-switch is added, and even so, I am not sure one gets the same tone as a genuine single coil MFD as on the SB-1/SB-2, and even worse compared to Alnicos as on the LB-100 or the JB/JB-2. The L-1505 pickup position does not look OK to me.
I had a M-2500 with the K-switch, but was never able to get a decent single coil tone with the 'halved' MFD humbuckers and the Paul Gagon pre-amp that has no passive option. I also had an ASAT Bass (that is very close to a L2K), though with no K-switch, same disappointment. Both were re-sold.
I recently got a SB-2, and that's it, it's definitely the best bass in my current stable (see the picture below). I now obviously miss a fiver, as close as possible to my SB-2 for the tone. Maybe the L-2.5K (passive mode) is a solution. Or this L-1005, which looks like a L-2500 with one MFD humbucker and no preamp, but I like to play with a two pickup mix (Jazz or P/J).
On that L-1005, do you know what the switch does ? Is it 2 or 3 positions?

That is a G&L prototype based on the L5000 with two Z-coil pickups. It's legit despite no headstock name, and though it's expensive, you can own a cool piece of Leo Fender/G&L history. Other than the L2500 K-mod, that's the only model I can think of that matches what you're describing from G&L.
It is a 3-position switch, selecting between boosted single coil (aka OMG) mode, single coil mode, and parallel wiring.

really some of these are starting to test my patience for holding out for black and maple

Finally sold the '88 sunburst for $900 - talking with the buyer, I realized I wasn't describing the truss rod nut situation very well: it was stripped where you put the hex wrench, not on the threaded portion. It took $8 and 8 minutes to fix all-in-all. Anyway, thanks for giving me a better idea of the used bass market while I was selling!
