Funny Town Names

Yeah, back around the beginning of the 20th century, most of S. Texas was ranch land, much of it held by old families that had been there since Spain held Mexico. When it was discovered how rich the Lower Valley soil was, and that citrus and cotton did well there, development firms came in and built towns to service the farms. Weslaco was built on cotton, fruit, and veggies, especially onions.

Funny, people think that "Weslaco" is a Spanish word.

Andice got its name because during Prohibition, they had to take "Beer" off the sign. People began calling it "And Ice", when they stopped there, and so we have this funny name. That county stayed dry until fairly recently.

Oatmeal has a yearly Oatmeal Festival. There's an Oatmeal Queen and Court, a parade, all manner of oatmeal recipie contests, and a music festival.

My great-uncle used to go fishing up there. He and my great-aunt would return with dozens of slides and as kids, my sisters and I would have to sit through the slide show. We did always get a kick out of that name.

People have mentioned Intercourse, Bird-in-Hand, and Blue Ball, Pennsylvania. They're in the rural Lancaster area, best known for its Amish population. Also in the vicinity are:

Virginville (I can see a natural rivalry with Intercourse! Imagine a football game … one team's bound to be big on defense and the other on offense)
Paradise (a possible rival with Blue Ball?)
Garden Spot (some wise guys shorten it to G-Spot; perhaps a potential rival with Bird-in-Hand)

In Heidelberg, Germany, a few years ago I saw a street sign on a little alleyway called Fahrtgasse. No, it doesn't mean what it might look like. ;)

In New England, many of the folks who came over from England brought their town names along too. Including Brighton, Mass (once its own town, now a neighborhood of Boston) and New London, Conn. However, I don't think they brought over any of the other ones you mentioned. :D

Of course, based on a lot of what has already been submitted, we were perfectly capable of coming up with new silly town names.

New London, Conn., is on the Thames River (pronounced thāmz) … but inexplicably, so are Groton and Norwich. ;)

Sorry to revive an old thread but HOLY CRAP. I live in Muletown. It's also known as Minford here. I guess if Muletown were an actual town, it would only be a garage, gas station, body shop, and a tire store. Thats it. I can't believe anyone even knows Muletown exists other than just seeing the name on a map.

There is a place near here called Slocum :D

Oh and I've been through Big Bone Lick many times also :eek:
