Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

Is anyone here using an FI in combination with Source Audio pedals and their hub. (Maybe @Hugsonic ?)

I’m interested in how that works out in practice, and what degree of midi integration you’re doing, whether by SA sole man or other. Do you control both FI and SA pedals from one place (e.g. soleman) or are FI and SA pedals on separate midi, or not midi at all.

I know I’m going to need to re-read the soleman manual before I head in this direction (still haven’t taken the plunge with SA, it may be nemesis 1st) but any practical tips from experience would be useful.

Hi. Yes im controlling FI and SA with the Soulman. To be honest im still working it out a bit but overall it works pretty well. So far i have only used the Soleman in panel mode.
Here are a few challenges Ive encountered:
PC messages change the patch on the FI but dont activate it. You can either have a bypass patch on the FI or set up a macro (using CC 66 - see FI manual) . I use both. It worth setting up a few macros. For bypass, FI on FI off etc. The you can set up macros to change patch and activate. You can also include PC changes for for the SA kit. From the SA side you need the hub, but once thats set up it a pretty easy (loads of videos on YouTube)
Have a go and share any tricks you have.

FI owners who play it live: have you ran any effects AFTER the FI that sounded amazing? I recently used my flanger after it for some Prince tunes which really dialed it up perfectly.

Any other suggestions?

All good suggestions, I’ve used delay, a touch or reverb, chorus, flanger and phase with success but I also love tremolo which is possibly my favourite post-FI

fyi i've recently been told by the folks at panda that there's gona be an update out soon with 'extensive modulation possibilities'. HYPE
I just want some MIDI updates...better MIDI clock response, a "toggle" on/off control, and MIDI Thru...

I've given up hope. This is the single most important feature that could SIGNIFICANTLY improve the pedal. We could be making soooo many more sounds, and better versions of what we already have, if there was ADSR on at least the filter.
@Andras Szalay in case you still check this thread, or even @lokki if you still talk to him.

Ok, now I try to explain you why we do not have a full ADSR on the FI, then you can try to explain me why should we have one:)
What we have is practically ADS, you can adjust attack and decay, and adjusting the filter FRQ is practically the same as adjusting sustain. What is missing is release. While on a keyboard this is an important feature, so I admit that if you use the FI as a MIDI expander then it would be useful, the situation is different in a guitar controlled (bass controlled) device. As the bass sound decays to zero in the release phase of the sound, the pitch tracking gets necessarily less and less stable, reliable. If the synth sound would have a long release time in this phase, then this instability would be painfully audible. Therefore, the release phase of the ADSR on the FI is automatically set to be equal to the actual natural release of the bass sound. So, actually a full ADSR is there, with the limitation that the R cannot be adjusted by you, it is set automatically in order to avoid unintended pitch irregularities.

I want nothing more from the unit, but I just find the editor very very difficult to use. The user manual is not very informative either. For example the pulse width and amplitude is something I could not hear what it does. Some videos of using the editor to create custom patches will be wonderful to someone new to synth terms like me. If only the editor can be as intuitive as turning knobs on a keyboard bass synth.

Hi Andras! Firstly let me say how lucky we are to have the designer wanting feedback from his customers. This is great - thank you so much!
Regarding the sustain: I think I understand what you are saying. But setting the filter FRQ to where you want the sustain is not ideal because in doing so you sacrifice control over what frequency the filter opens at.
Regarding the release: I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. I would have assumed that the release would be triggered by a 'note off' command. The user could then adjust the note off parameter to a level before tracking became an issue. (this might require increasing the range of the note on/off params, as tweaking them doesn't seem to have much effect at the moment).
Finally: I've said it before in this thread but I'm not sure if you've seen it - it would be great to have the option for the filter envelope to be re-triggered by a note on command - i.e. so that the note on command triggers the attack from 0. At the moment it seems that you have to wait for the filter to decay back to 0 if you want the attack of your next note to start at 0.
It is of course very possible that I have misunderstood how to operate the FI. If so, my apologies - please enlighten me! Thanks again for being willing to listen to us

No, I think you've accurate described how it currently works, and how some of us users would prefer it to work.

It might be helpful if someone could create a video demonstrating ADSR on a hardware synth vs attempting to recreate the same sounds using the Future Impact. That would likely make it much more clear as to what we're attempting to accomplish with our Future Impact change requests. Or maybe simply some audio/video of synth sounds that are currently impossible to recreate effectively on the Future Impact that our suggested changes would make available to us.

For example, right now you really cannot create any longer PAD sounds due to the lack of sustain/release, and fighting with the envelope retriggering requiring you to wait until the existing decay reaches 0.

Good idea! Here's a short loop I made a while back using a fretless into a terratec Axon AX50 audio-midi converter (which I believe Andras designed! - is this true Andras?), with Native Instrument's Massive softsynth controlled with a Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller. I had to ditch the AX50 because of software issues, which is why i got the FI. Waveforms aside, I've found it pretty much impossible to replicate what I could do with Massive in that clip (bass and pad) and elsewhere. That's not to say it can't be done - i'm no expert, so If anyone can tell me how to do it with the FI I would be very grateful! The two main obstacles as far as I can tell are the note-on retrigger issue and the lack of ADSR. Greater MIDI assigning flexibility would be next. I have a list of smaller changes that I think could really make the the FI a serious piece of kit. Andras, I'd be very happy to take the time to explain my thinking with you! I wouldn't even charge ;). I think the FI is great at the moment but it has SO much potential it seems a shame not to realise it! Anyway, thanks again. [disclaimer, I am NOT a synthesis expert. I'm just pointing to things that strike me as no-brainer improvements].
