Guys, if your ABM bridges are not letting you have the right saddle height, string angle, etc, why not swap it out for a Hipshot? I know the A-style has the same holes, so it's a drop-in, as is the B-style one. The B isn't adjustable with the string spacing, but can get even lower action, do to the smaller saddles. Hipshot is an awesome company to work with, too...very friendly and helpful. Also, if you ask, they might even do custom color (plating) combos, too! Talk to Jason Ungleich if you're interested.

well, there was this one piece of wood I had to have. The rest of the board is very nice, but this end is special. There is one more sibling to come from the same part of the board, a 5-string. Yeah, I should've made a 6, just to round out the family, but not so many interested in 6's today. With a layer of Purple Heart under the walnut, it looks like some fancy dessert to me! Thus, the title "marbled walnut decadence!"

Beautiful walnut...beautiful basses. The top on my ggi6 is spalted maple and looks to be quite lovely in the photos I've seen. This will be my second bass with that wood for a top while I actually prefer basses with darker woods for tops. Some of my favorites are Walnut, Koa, Bubinga, Cocobolo and Shedua.

I like that slice of purpleheart under the top. It looks very nice.

The ggi6 arrived safely today. Played it some as it was and, again, do not care for the tone of the stainless strings but did admire their clarity. Very little relief in the neck and action was set very low so I was getting a lot of fret buzz. I removed the strings and did a bit of cleaning before installing a set of D'Adarrio XL's. I made some adjustments to the string saddle height and tried to guess where they would need to be. Did not do too bad but, of course some additional adjustments were required to get the action where I wanted it. I also adjusted the intonation.

The bass sounds about like I thought it would. Very clear and sweet voice everywhere on the fingerboard. I believe this will quickly become my go to bass for most gigs on electric bass.

I included some photos of my ggi5. So, now I have two of Geoff's autographs.

I've spent some time playing the ggi6 now that it is set up the way I prefer. This is an amazing bass. Yeah, guys use that word amazing a lot but I have to say that I have owned 6 string basses by many manufacturers including Roscoe, Ken Smith Spector USA, Modulus and Ibanez Prestige and no other 6 string bass that I have played comes close to this Gould. It is very comfortable due in part to the light weight but also the neck is just about perfect. It is so natural feeling to play this bass and, you probably know, that some 6 string basses are almost overwhelmingly strange to play because of the ergonomics. This bass feels like home as soon as you touch it. Of course it has all the things we love about Geoff's basses...great sounding and easy to use electronics, fantastic feeling neck, wonderful fretwork and beautiful wood work. The thing that is so special is the completely even tone and response everywhere on the neck. From the highest note to the lowest....great tone with terrific clarity.

You may have noticed in my list above that I have owned a Modulus 6. It was a very good bass (perhaps the second best 6 I have owned) but there is something superior about the ergonomics of the Gould basses. They just fit me better. I am 5'7" slender build with fairly small hands.

My hat is off to you, Geoff! You really knocked the ball out of the park with this one.

I only put this bass down when I have to. It is the most natural feeling 6 string bass I have ever played. Also the C string sounds very good...completely balanced with the other strings. Some multistring basses, especially the inexpensive ones, have a strident sounding C and an anemic and ill defined B. The ggi6 just sounds great everywhere on the fingerboard on all the strings. This makes it practical to play across the fingerboard and minimizes position shifts.

Just joined the club! Picked up a GGi4 from the Classifieds here, and I am loving it. Incredibly light, comfortable to play, great neck. Seems like a keeper.

That said- I'd like to change out the Babicz bridge, and possibly the stock EMG 35x set and preamp.

I'm thinking about changing over to a Hipshot B style bridge (brass), and set of Bartolini Classic Bass pickups w/a Bart 2-band pre. Thoughts/recommendations?

I own basses with Bartolini preamps/pickups and I have two of Geoff's basses with EMG's with only bass and treble controls. My opinion is that the EMG's are perfect for my Gould basses and I have no plans to change them. They sound fantastic through a good amp IMO. The bridge on your bass is one I could not live with. They are probably fine bridges but they are certainly ugly...again IMO. There have been many bridge designs that have come and gone and I believe the Babicz will go the way of the Wilkinson.

The other side of the tone equation is the amp. My practice room amp is an Alembic F-2B with a Telefunken ECC83 in channel one and a lovely old Mullard in channel 2, a Crown K2 power amp and an Eden 210XLT. For electric bass on gigs I usually use an Alembic F-1X with an RCA 7025 tube into a Crown K2 or a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2 into a pair of Aguilar GS112's.

My Gould basses sound fantastic through these amps. No other basses I've owned have had the even response and sweet tone of the Gould basses. I would think twice before changing out the electronics. Just my opinion.

I'm pleased that pretty bass found a new home. It is a beauty!
