Still, I can understand your frustration.

All I can say is that Mr. Gould is an excellent craftsman and very responsive both here and by email. Hopefully, he will respond and I would urge you to give his basses a second chance - they are well worth it.

This has been a concerning experience for me. I'm not perfect, and have made mistakes in life. The bottom line (pun intended?) is that I will stand behind any GG instrument. I consider it a challenge to attain the unattainable level of perfection imaginable. That being said, I am looking forward to getting the bass back, and checking it out in detail. I suspect most items are adjustment-related, but I have an open mind, and will use this experience to make improvements.

Lastly, I was also wondering about the bisonic pickups - are they made with real bison?

Short answer is no. I wouldn't even consider doing that. IMHO EMG pre's and EMGX pickups work so well together tonaly & with their plugin architecture. I have no doubt you could probably make it work, But they sound really really phenomenal together especially with the modification that Geoff made to the Emg pickup!!! Only mod I would consider or suggest is adding the EMG BQC Pre with the Mids.!!!

We did a GGi6 for Sage Ali in DC, and he loves it. It seems like it could be overpowering for some preamps/amps, but as long as you don't turn all the knobs to 11, you'll be ok.

Thanks Geoff, The Emg pre sounds fine as is, I just know I love the Aguilar Obp-3’s massive headroom & muscular tone & have been curious about pairing it up w/ the Emg pickups. Appreciate the info !

I ordered an EMG BQC-System for the NAMM ggi5. I had time to install it today and it sounds better to me. With all controls centered it sounds warmer like it has an increase in the very low mids. I also have this in my ggi6 and love the way it sounds and have to admit I never use the mid control.

For me...the EMG BQC-System with the EMG PU’s tweaked to Geoff’s specifications is terrific sounding.

I'm sure it'll be good; I don't know if you can actually make Gould/Modulus basses sound bad, just varying flavors of awesome :thumbsup:. But if you're looking for a pretty widely known reference tone, EMG DC pickups with an Aguilar preamp are the recipe for what's widely recognized as the "classic Spector tone". Grindy, grunty, ballsy, and aggressive.

Granted, Spector aficionados will argue ad nauseum about HazLab vs TonePump vs Aguilar, but they're all very much in the same ballpark, with the TonePump generally getting the least love. Spectors generally use a two band (OBP-1/OBP-2), but the OBP-3 sounds very similar those preamps.

And of course, how far it moves your tone towards that classic Spector tone also depends on which EMG pickups you have - DCs are the most aggressive/bright variation, with other EMG types being somewhat more tame/less bright. But I don't think anyone would describe any EMG bass pickup to be in the category of "mellow", so regardless of which EMGs you have, pairing them with an Aguilar pre is going to go towards that well-known Spector tone.

The reason I stopped using the BQC was mainly because, in the wrong hands, you COULD make the bass sound bad! When I use it (I currently have a BQC on my latest GGi6-Sprint prototype) I find the boosted midrange frequency that sounds most annoying, then I cut this frequency!

Got this GGi6 in trade. Giving it a spa treatment and replacing some of the hardware/electronics. Beautiful sounding instrument. I really love the feel of the body. Bit more comfortable than my Q6. My first Gould and am very impressed with the design and would like to have another with the wider string spacing.

That one was very early. Can you measure the 24th fret for me? How wide?
