It's beautiful whatever species. Canary does look more like the wide grain patterns.

I worked with Pau Ferro when I built Tobias basses for Gibson. I've seen grain similar to this during that time. Also just bought some colobolo from a gentelman who harvested 7000bf from Nicaragua and there are similarities there as well.
Whatever it is it's a beautiful piece!

I have a question for my fellow Gould players. What strings do you guys use to keep tension low in your 35 inch scale basses? I like really low tension on my 34s and 33.5s. The extra string length makes strings more taut. Wondering what to try to get the feel closer to my preference.

Not gould but peavey b quad 5 player here. Having great experience with ken smith bass burners tapered light set. They're nickel.

The TI Jazz Roundwound strings are really nice and have very low tension. I like higher tension so they did not work for me but I tried the five-string set I have here on every one of my basses including my GGi5. I really wish that I could handle the low tension because the sound of the TI strings is excellent, they last a long time and the windings are extremely smooth. I can confirm that the TI Jazz set will fit on your 35" scale bass. Good luck with the search, finding the right strings for your bass and playing style makes a huge difference.

So, here's another one. The Deep Space One. Single Novak BS/DS pickup. Push/Pull master volume switches between the louder BS and the more 'hi-fi' DS windings:

I actually purchased this instrument over the weekend and a couple of days after paying, I received a detailed message from the seller with numerous pictures and an explanation that the instrument was in way rougher condition than the few pictures showed, the neck was twisted and the truss rod was almost tightened to its limit with action very high.

Needless to say, I asked to cancel the order for a full refund and thankfully they obliged.

Clearly these are honorable sellers as they complied with my refund request. I’m just posting this as a warning because this thing is beaten up pretty badly and I would imagine it would cost a pretty penny sending this to Geoff or someone else to have the neck fixed. By my back of the envelope calculation it would cost more than the current market price for the same bass second hand in very clean condition.

If I may, it's a well established shop in Central Tokyo and I don't think they're dishonest or anything. At least they came forward with the true condition of it. But at this point, if it's that bad...they should advertise it like that. A twisted neck...well basically you have to set up a new one. I'm curious, maybe I'll swing by to try it

I might be inclined to go with "partially honorable" because they fessed up and refunded you (thank goodness!). But because they failed to be as detailed in the original listing, I'd have serious reservations describing this seller as "honorable". You should not have had to deal with this hassle, and wouldn't have if they had been forthright.

Here are the pictures they sent me. This thing is beat up from the feet up. Looks like it has a lot of residual grime from tobacco smoke as well. Save for the big chips on the horn and headstock, none of this showed up in the 4 shots of the bass that are featured on the listing. Most of their listings are that way so if you are buying from this seller, request lots of pictures!
