G&L Club Part 6

Attached is a diagram of a wiring diagram that I want to use for non-G&L pups. The wires that come out of a G&L humbucker are green black, white, and yellow. A lot of humbucker wiring diagrams mention south and north coils with start and finish wires. What I need to know is which wire is "south coil start", which wire is "south coil finish" which wire is "north coil start", and which wire is "north coil finish". Does anybody here know?

Am I right in thinking that black/white are south start/finish, and that green/yellow are north start/finish?

So I love my G&L L5500 with EMG pickups. I've read plenty of mixed reviews but the size, weight and string spacing work perfectly me. I find that the EMG pickups sound great direct into the house with the EQ flat or with just minor tweaking. Even better, running it through my MarkBass preamp first provides me with a nice, deep tone with plenty of character and a very tight thump that gets consistent kudos.

That said, I've read on other TB posts that upgrading from 9v to 18v can make a significant improvement to dynamics and character of the guitar.

The EMG site says...

"Q: Can I use multiple batteries? A: Yes. If you've got room for multiple batteries in your guitar, you can use two batteries wired in series to power your onboard circuitry at 18 volts. The output level will not appreciably increase, but you'll have increased headroom and crisper transients."

Here are my questions...

1. Is the 9-18v upgrade safe for the EMGs in G&L?
2. Does anyone have experience with this mod? Does it really make a noticeable difference?
3. Are there any other mods or upgrades that you would recommend for the L5500?

I have not done this mod to an L-5500, but I've done it to another EMG-equipped bass that had a preamp with HUGE gain/boost. First, yes, it's entirely safe to go to 18V on EMGs, regardless of who made the bass they are in. Second, it really won't make a big difference under normal circumstances. Where the 18V is nice is if you like to run the bass/treble at full boost and the 9V battery is on the low side.

You can experiment with this by taking 3 9V battery clips and wiring them together in series. Put 2 9V batteries on 2 of the clips and clip the 3rd to the clip in the bass. See how it is and then decide if you want to permanently mod the bass.

Yeah good point, I really like my L2000 and want the same thing with the low B when I need it. I'll keep looking for the right L2500 to come along.

I want to order an M2500, does anyone know if G&L will add a passive/active switch? I've always been paranoid about battery death during a gig....Ebony board, quarter sawn neck, blackburst over flame maple with natural wood binding, no position markers, black headstock.... can't wait!

MF Deal of the Day M2500.
It did not appear to have been opened and inspected by MF, so, this could have happened on the way to them.
double box, padded, bubble wrapped.

did not come with gig bag.

on it's way back for a refund.
it did still work, I would not have kept it.
nice bass, played well, sounded fine, just not my flavor.

I don't know Chef, I bought a Hofner from MF a few years ago that had some cosmetic finish flaws and something wrong with the bridge. I sent it back for an exchange, and MF ended up resending me the same bass I had just returned! When I called them about it, they said their inspection didn't find the flaws--so they sent it back with the "new" instruments to re-sell! After that I decided never to buy another bass from them and risk getting someone else's return.

I had a JB, the neck was a typical G&L #8. Jazz width, 12" radius, very nice slim neck. Feels a bit more modern than a vintage Jazz due to the flatter radius but otherwise it felt exactly like a very nice Jazz neck.
Mine was bit on the heavy side at 9.8 lbs, alder body. Sounded really great and the build quality was top notch.

I could answer this as I have one.

The tone is semi-aggressive. Not as in-your-face as an L-series, but it still has that distinctive MFD grind to it. I guess you could say it's a more polite L-series. I often crank up the treble on it, but that likely has more to do with my treble-shy TH500 amp than the bass. Compared to other double-bucker basses, it's not as smooth and does have a somewhat aggressive character to it with certain grind present.

I'd post sound clips, but the recording engineer pretty well lopped off all the bass top-end on our band demo and you really don't get a sense of what the bass really sounds like.:spit:

I really only spent 2-3 minutes with it.
It's "cleaner and more modern" than an L series, but, still very much that flavor.

1.5" width, 12" radias.. not particularly thick.. mebbe a bit thinner than a Fender jazz.. for me its a great neck.

Thanks much Mystic. I have a Trib SB-2 and really love the neck on it, so the JB should feel like home. Ed Freidland describes it as thicker (front to back) than a jazz which made me wonder a bit. I can get along with some weight, but not a mid 70s 12-lb. jazz.

I was also considering an Am. Std. jazz, but found the newer ones with the CS60s to be too dark for my tastes. Then I thought of G&L since I really dig the SB-2 and M2500 that I have. Got a great deal on a JB off Ebay. I figured I can't really go wrong with a G&L.

I'll post pics of it and its other G&L siblings when it gets to me.
