I have Roto 66's on my L-2500 and love them.
Edit - I should have read your post properly before posting. MFDs are not dark sounding!

I switched to DR hi-beams when a set came on a bass I bought. I really love the round core feel. Much easier to slap for me. They also hold their tone for a long time. I don't consider them harsh at all and they're certainly not the brightest string I've ever used.
For the music I play, they're just perfect for MFDs.
I've been a long-time lover of DR Strings and I recently got a set of Sunbeams and a set of Fat-Beams, both 45-130 for the Kiloton 5.
Sad to report that the Sunbeams did not live up to my expectations (my first set) and killed a bit of the "excitement" and thunder that the B string offered. I'm going to try the Fat-Beams next. If that doesn't work i'm going back to hex cores.

I love the Sunbeams on my Fender Jazz, but I'm not sure I would want them on a Kiloton either. I used to have the similar L-1500, and on that DR Lo-Riders were my favorites. I believe I preferred the nickel plated set, but both were great.

I'm surprised it's described as a tobacco sunburst, which is what I thought my Kiloton is.
(it has the greenish-brown color one associates with that substance.)
I guess calling it "old school tobacco sunburst" makes it a (totally) different look/color.
Funny. In my mind it makes me like them more. The human touch? Or maybe the robots are just outsmarting me. In any case, your bass and my two are all theoretically "tobacco sunburst."
On a other note, I absolutely love the way these basses play and sound. I've never enjoyed playing a p-bass, but I can totally live with these single pickup monsters.
That's interesting. The "Old School" version is like a cherry burst with some brown in it, while your tobacco burst is brown to black (don't really see the green) like my L-1000 below.
That Kiloton on the right is definitely a 3-color burst.
Well your tobacco burst is much more just brown to black, where as ProbablyTooLoud's bass on the right side has more yellow/orange in the lighter sections, like my JB. (picture makes it look a bit darker than it is).
You're right. I looked back at the original purchase listing on the fretless: "3-tone sunburst."
Totally. Mine is pine. Maybe the lighter colored wood has an effect? Not sure what alder looks like with no finish. But pine is def yellowish.

Different woods absorb stains differently. I know I'm stating the obvious here, but I thought I'd mention it so everybody could say: "That guy's an idiot! Doesn't he realize we already know that?" Please feel free to talk about me behind my back. Just don't let me hear it. Whatever the case, I'd be glad to call any of those basses pictured above my own. They are all beautiful! (There's that 'stating the obvious' thing again. I gotta get over that.)
Checked my build sheet and my JB is listed as 3-Tone Sunburst as well.
