While I prefer Rosewood, I kinda like how the fingerboard seems to blend with the G&L logo on the headstock!

Would love to know how the neck compares to a '62 Jazz neck if by chance you've got one nearby for comparison...

I agree, but certainly not on everything. A couple years ago I traded some work for a Peavey T-40. It was the usual natural ash with a maple neck and a black 3-ply pickguard. Bland. I bought a tort pickguard for it and it spruced it right up. And it still maintains that 44-year-old classic look, plays like a dream, sounds great, and weighs more than the Queen Mary.

Yep, I'll go along with that as well. I'm a huge tort fan and all of my basses with pickguards are tort-ed. However, I don't like it with every color. Luckily for me, the finishes that I prefer are finishes that I think look fantastic with tort.

That's easy:
Rosewood - Brown Tort
Maple - Red Tort
Everything else - Your Tort preference.

You are very naughty people. All this talk about sunburst finishes led me into looking at LB100`s. Now I have a old school tobacco burst finish arriving tomorrow

I have a Tribute JB-2 in 3-tone sunburst, and I had a Tribute L2000 and a Tribute LB-100 in 3-tone sunburst. If I were to rate 3-tone sunburst, I'd say I like it, particularly for its classic vibe, but on the other hand, I sold 2 out of the 3 basses I had in that finish. What's the old saying?: The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

I'm neutral on bursts. I've had several, and still have a couple. My "lifer" bass is a 3TS L-2000. I really do like the OST that G&L offers, and frankly it's the only burst I'd actually consider on an option order bass.
But I'd probably pick red above anything else anyway, so it's nice that there are so many red options available.

One sunburst that always amuses me is that on the high end MIJ Yamaha BB Pro 34:

Presumably in the late 70s a particularly ineptly painted Fender was bought by Yamaha HQ to be used as a template for the three tone sunburst, and it's still there, still being used as an example of the ideal.

I think bursts come into their own when over special wood. The two tone sunburst can look a bit dour, but over what the advert says is spalted alder, it's something else:
