G&L Club Part 7

If you don't want to string all strings through the body, and you don't want to do the mod, you can put one or 2 through the body and the rest through the bridge and you won't have a problem. There's no discernible difference in tone between the strings through the body and through the bridge when they are mixed. It's the lazy way out, but it works just fine.
Does the string thru body give more sustain than string thru bridge?

it is recommended to use the string thru body because otherwise the bridge is held down by only two screws and can eventually pull out. There's a workaround to this where people put bolts through the holes and affix them with a nut inside the string ferrules, if you're really adamant about using thru-bridge stringing. It's documented pretty well on the basses by Leo site.

Not unless the bridge isn't properly secured to the body.

As @lomo said, it doens't increase sustain [in any perceivable way] unless the bridge isn't secured to the body.

The G&L bridge has a block underneath it that sinks into a route in the body and places all of the lateral force of the strings against the block/body interface. However, the original design was held down by only 2 screws, and in some rare cases in soft woods, those screws could pull out of the body. It's been documented, but I've never seen it personally across any of the G&Ls I've owned or played. It's a potential, but certainly not guaranteed, failure point. IMO, nothing to be concerned about unless you start to see the bridge pulling up on the back side or find the screws are loosening up in the wood.

Inside my Jan. '97 L-2500:
Found a note on Preamp versions and timing from Paul Gagon on another forum (post is from 2016). Quoted below for reference.

"... Rev 1.0 was the first preamp to address the noise issue. It was done in September of 1992 and used the LF441 chip and value scaled down the resistors. These resistors were made from metal film and had a tolerance of 1%. The frequency response was the same as the original but the circuit noise was quite a bit less. I took great care in evaluating the sound of this preamp against the original with a ton of bass players. No way was I going to mess with the sound of the bass. I just wanted to reduce the circuit hiss.

Rev 1.1 was done to go back to the LM4250 chip because it was being so difficult to get the LF441. Besides, with the proper value of the bias resistor that connects to pin 8 of the 4250 you can achieve the same noise spec as the 441. This version was done in October 1997...."

^This. I would be more likely to try a slightly different G&L rather than doing the L2500/L2000 pairing. An L-1000, Kiloton, SB1 or SB2 is where I would go if I were getting a 4 string to go with an L2500. You could also consider another 5 string if you do the L1000 Series 750 or Kiloton.
I think I want a 4 mostly for those times when I'm either sharing the bass with other players at a jam or open mic, and when I expect I'll be doing some thumb action. Also, I think differently with 4 strings.

With the finger to Fender? Yes. It's all that was available in the BTO choices. At least I don't remember the paddle shape being offered.
I think we are saying the same things, the 80s and CLF lawsuit headstock is the original one, and I found out the same thing you did as I want to swap out my '81's 1-5/8" neck with a 1-1/2" but that is not available in the lawsuit / paddle headstock, so I am checking with custom builders for options, will probably wind up with a true Fender headstock.

Yes, I agree. It would be nice to have the original headstock shape, but to be honest, the pointy has grown on me. It's also interesting to me how the headstocks vary in shape with regard to the points. My L2K headstock shape is different from my JB. Maybe each model has it's own headstock shape. Good luck with your search for the Fender shape headstock. I'm sure you could find one. Do you think a neck from Warmoth or Mighty Mite would fit? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question.

Hello fellow Basskateers,
I tried to find a G n L club in here and couldn't find one so tried to start my own, thinking it was odd one did not exists….and a very kind TBer pointed me here! Great stuff!! Hi G n L bass fam, suuuuup?✌️
So a bit of my story is my first ever "pro level" bass way back in 1997 was a G n L ASAT followed not long after by the monster that is/was the L5500 and the L2000.
I have recently jumped off the Ibanez boat and jumped back on the G n L boat and joined the family there as an endorsee and I am super stoked and highly inspired by and with these instruments. I play the Fullerton USA L2500 and the Fallout USA short scales. Here is a photo from my first gig back with G n L basses from a couple months back and one of more recently where you can see I have flipped the pickups in that Fallout USA and L2500 USA to the EMG DC pickups and BTC pre as my homage to the L5500 and my Fallout is simply Killer with this combo in it. Also there is a little video I just did for KHDK Electronics demoing their new TOTALITY bass distortion where you can check out the killer sound and let me know what you think about my mods?!?!Just wanted to share some love for what I consider to be the best of Leo's legacy currently available. Peace out✌️

What did you have to do to fit EMG soapbars into a space previously occupied by MFD humbuckers. I ask because I'd like to do the opposite. I have a non-G&L bass that has an EMG passive soapbar and I'd love to drop an MFD in there in its place, but measurements proved it impossible without routing and filling.

Do you get better service for not paying? Basses that don't need taking to a tech to be finished off, things built to spec the first time, truss rods that work, pickguards that fit, instruments built before you've almost forgotten the enthusiasm you ordered them with, yadda yadda yadda? G&Ls without the B&S, must be bliss

Gotta say, if/when I get my SB-1 back from Dysfunctionality Avenue, the last thing I'll be doing it ditching the MFD pickup.
