I read that they went with a 4-bolt neck and the 20 fret fingerboard on the JB to make it look and sound more like a Fender Jazz Bass. If that's the case, why does the LB-100 have a 6-bolt, 21-fret neck? After all, the "LB" stands for "Legacy Bass." Isn't a 4-bolt, 20 fret neck part of that legacy? Isn't it G&L's version of the P-bass? G&L logic.

My take is that these are all improvements, I prefer my LB-100 over a Fender. As far as the JB5 goes, don't have one, couldn't tell ya.

I have nothing against a 21 fret neck...or a 20. Heck, my Steinbergers have 24 fret necks, and they feel fine. It just seems it would be simpler to decide. Why not make them all 6-bolt, 21-fret necks, including Tributes? Or all 20-fret, 4-bolt necks...just decide. But whatever, I still buy 'em and play 'em.

Since we're talking basses with a 34" scale, the extra approximately 1/2" has to come with an extended neck pocket in the body of the bass for a 21 fret neck. Take that away with a 20-fret neck and the neck pocket has to be shorter to keep the scale at 34". So yes, you're right. There are other ways it could be done, but since their aim was to produce a Jazz Bass, why mess with a proven design?

I get what you're saying fer sure... The one thing I know is that we'll probably never know! Likely an arbitrary decision from within the company.
