And that's why I'm scared of a short scale.

I've got a short scale that'll ensure you don't have that problem...

It's an AWESOME (in the right context) sounding Greco full hollow body built in Japan in the 60's or early 70's. The action is about 1/2" at the heel, and it's not going any lower. Talk about a chore to play... My upright is easier to play than that bass, though it also has similar action (but a 42" scale). As I told my son, you better mean every note you play, cause if you're not totally, 100% committed to that note, it's not gonna happen.

I'm sure my lack of interest in short scale has little to do with that bass, but that bass surely doesn't stoke any short-scale fires.

I've gotta say, what I'd love to do is get a red Tribute Fallout and swap necks with one of the rosewood fretboard Tributes.
CAR + rosewood would make me happy.

Question on body binding: Natural wood binding follows the curve of the body. Does black and white binding do the same, or is the body made as a flat top similar to a Rick 4003? Anyone with natural wood or plastic binding that can comment on how they like or dislike it?

Natural wood binding is not actually binding, just a strip that has been taped off when the rest of the finish is applied, as far as I know.

That would be a sick combo too. I guess with the Fallouts you're trading the availability of parts and customization for owning and playing something unique!

I can only say one thing about plastic binding....to me....it was just one more thing that you'd have to baby your bass to prevent it from breaking off, so it always seemed to turn me off. Others may love it, and that's a-ok.

I do, it's a Tribute and it's currently my preferred one… I had previously owned a Fullerton M-2500 some 10 years ago. Parting with it was a mistake

Something like, but not exactly. On the L-series basses, the strings cross two coils on each pickup. On the SB-2, the strings cross a single coil on each pickup (though the split-coil neck pickup is still a humbucker). So it'd be like comparing a P-J setup and a dual-coil humbucker setup from any other brand of pickup.

I started with a 67' Mustang short scale bass ( I was 12 yrs old) till my full-size 77' Precision . Played that until 2 years ago when age and hand difficulties led me back to short scale. Got a MUsic Man Sterling short scale to test the waters out and found I could play again.
Got the Japan Jazz junior last year, LOVE that bass. Decide to pull the trigger on a G&L Fallout Fullerton as I have been eyieng them for awhile.
Turned out to be an excellent choice. It does have the feel of a long scale neck with the short scale size. And the pickup is very versatile, I especially like the "OMG" position of the 3 way switch. I used that for some pink floyd and it gives me a fat warm tone with amazing sustain.. My guitar player picked it up not plugged in and was wowed at the sustain of the instrument by itself. Ofcourse once plugged into my Mesa800 , 6x10 amp he was floored. I am now a fan of the G&L. I added a black pick guard and gold knobs.
