There's a discussion at bassesbyleo.com about the pickup placement of the L1500. It seems clear that there has been two distinct and different placement of the pickup, so it depends which version you own.

The #7 was the default on the L-1500 for the first several years of its existence. So they will likely be the most common profile you'll find.

It's quite likely that my black L-1500 was a custom order (I got it used) as it has a #8 neck with no markings of any kind on the rosewood face, only on the top edge. ...very sleek! ...and what a player!

@Cuzzie there was the Climax in 93-96. That had the #8 neck, a smaller body and the pup in the SR sweet spot.

Then the earliest batch of L-1500s in 96 had the L-2000 body shape, #7 neck and the pup was in the L-2000 bridge position. Not sure what the production numbers were for this, but overall pretty low.

Pretty soon they moved the pickup back into the SR sweet spot while maintaining the body and neck shapes. But I think a common factory upgrade on these was to do a #8 neck with no dots.

All that's left are the L-2000 and the Legacy guitar. Currently, I have those plus an older LB-100 and another US L-2000. And a few non-G&Ls...

All this talk about the L-1500....thanks for reminding me that I have one stashed away in a closet! Got it from bdgotoh a couple years ago (thanks Brad!).

A 2002 model with a quartersawn #7 neck with an ebony board. Weighs 8lbs, 6oz. The sunburst finish is much prettier in person. Real nice bass, great big sound.

@Cuzzie, the El Toro is nothing like the L-1500 or the L-2000. It's hard to describe. But it is very punchy, the low end and mids are awesome, but I have to roll the treble off to almost 50%. I like it a lot, more than the L-1200, but not as much as the L-1500.

There's that cool Belair 1500 again. Yours looks nicer than a lotta other Belairs.

Maybe the light maple board adds a little "surfness" to it. Sometimes Belair can look kinda offputting. You got a good one there!
