I totally agree about the combo of the Belair and the maple board. I prefer rosewood, but not on this bass. The maple really seems to work!

To be fair i probably cannot get it now, i would get smashed by the wife (tried to hide the ASAT unsuccessfully and currently failed to hide a PA system), however if you are thinning the herd please bear me in mind and message me.

That's interesting, learned something new. I didn't pay any attention to it at the time, but now I'm wondering about the pickup placement on my first 1500, which was an uncontrollably aggressive sounding bass. Sounded like a chainsaw with a bad attitude. I seem to recall that it was built around the time you're referring to.
It also had the noisiest preamp imaginable. So bad that I contacted G&L about it (a guy named Memo). He said they had a bad run of opamp chips around that time. Even though I bought the bass used, G&L sent me an updated opamp for free, I had it in 3 days. The new chip fixed the noise, but not the overly raspy nature of the bass.
Does anyone know (even roughly) the distance from the bridge to pickup for the "SR"-style L-1500 pickup placement? ...just curious which version I have (besides the #8 neck with no dots). Mine measures 2" from the front edge of the bridge to edge of the pickup.
I can measure the distant tonight on both my L-1500 and my SR. Curious how similar they are.
That would be good, although I suppose to compare with the SR we may have to measure another way since the bridge is a different shape. ...maybe measure from the nut to the center-line of the pickup? On mine, the distance from the nut to the center-line of the pickup is 30 3/4 inches. I don't have an L-2000 (or a Sting Ray) to compare it to.

I recently mentioned a few pages back I managed to score a mahogany EL Toro. The good news is the neck is straight, truss rod works, no ski ramps or anything, but I can't get the action low enough for my liking. The Saddles are down as far as as they can go. I guess the neck thing is a shim,
Don't have the measurements, but check the alignment of the pole pieces with the knobs.
Current/standard/"SR placement" will have the neck-side row of poles about even with the volume knob and the bridge-side poles between volume and treble.
The small batch that matched the L-2000 bridge pickup location will have the bridge-side poles aligned with the treble knob and the neck-side poles between volume and treble.

Ah, thanks for that. I can easily see that mine is the standard/SR alignment, not the latter, which I understand is the L-2000 bridge position. I don't have an exact date for mine (though I'm always willing to pull a neck if there's a good enough reason), but I think mid or late '90's.
