G&L Club Part 7

Hi everyone! I'm unexpectedly joining the club... I picked this beauty from 1998 up over the weekend. It's the one that appeared in that year's catalogue. It's stunning. Medium weight, very resonant... looking forward to gigging it tomorrow night.

Yep, they do. I used a Fender Black Sparkle guard for awhile on my G&L JB, then moved it to my 2003 Fender. Fits fine on both. And my Fender's original guard fits fine on the JB. My JB is from 2010, so it's not a Fullerton Deluxe, but I can't imagine they would be different. Then again, G&L.

Since we're discussing the G&L JB, and we've recently had posts involving the awesome JB MFD--WHEN ARE WE GETTING A FREAKING JB-5 MFD?! Much want.

I'm way into my 2017 JB5 these days, so if they do make an MFD version I hope you could just buy the pickups (and they'd fit)!

NBD! The JB MFD came today! First impressions are very favorable. The first thing that struck we when I picked it up for the first time was the weight.
Very light. It is swamp ash and was listed at 9 lbs., but it feels lighter than that to me. So much lighter than my alder JB. It didn't take much in the area of setup. Just string height and pickup height. I emailed Memo about this and he answered very quickly and said this: "Normally we set the pickup height to 3/32" from the top of the pole piece to the bottom of the string with the last fret fretted. As for string height, we also measure at the 17th fret E and A string is 6/64"(3/32") the D and G strings are set to 5/64." So that's what I went with.

It plays wonderfully. I haven't played it with the guys yet, but I think it'll be great. It's not very noisy at all, I don't know if I should be surprised or not. There is a little bit of noise when I back off the volume of one pickup but nothing like with alnicos. Nice build quality, as all I've ever had with my Fullerton G&Ls (this is my third Fullerton). The finish is beautiful, playing with a maple fretboard is nice after playing on rosewood for quite awhile.

I like the idea but I'm wondering if introducing the master volume control into the circuit changed the overall tone in any way. Like, does having it in the circuit give a different tone with both pickups maxed then you would get without the master wired in?

Some folks suggest that even just having that extra circuitry of the master vol knob wired into the circuit, even if dimed, changes the tone. Did you notice that?

Honestly, I haven't noticed any changes in the tones available after adding the master volume control. Of course, anytime something is added to a circuit, there can be associated changes. I usually set the neck pickup first and then add in the bridge pickup until I get the tone I am looking for. Then I adjust the overall volume with the master. In my experience, all of the tones that I had used before the mod were present afterwards. I have no way of telling (nor do I really care) if the interaction between the two pickup volume controls occurred at different degrees of relative arc as opposed to the original two volume controls.

I have a Fullerton Deluxe JB and love it but $4525.00 for a custom shop bass and it still comes with a gig bag instead of a hardshell case? WOW!

A Sadowsky NYC is gonna come with a gig bag at a whole lot more than $4525. Personally, I'd much rather have the bag than another hard case to deal with.

Your allowed to like a gig bag over a case that's your choice it's just once you start getting to a certain price point I think a good case should be standard.Although it wouldn't keep me from buying it though.Kinda like buying a new exotic sports car at over $100K and they don't throw in a tank of gas or a few oil changes to show they appreciate your business.Just my 2 cents.WOW! what a beautiful bass though.

I recently bought a used L-2000 Tribute from Japan and got it shipped to Norway.

When I received it, it turns out that the neck is warped. I had it at a luthier, and he did his best with it, so the bass is playable now. The neck is still not perfect, and I cant get the action low enough for my preference without a lot of fret buzz.

Does anybody know about somewhere I can get a hold of a replacement neck for this bass? Are there any shops that offer necks that fits? Or does a neck from some other brand of basses fit, like say a Stingray neck?

Also, I've ordered a new switch to do the k-mod on this bass. There is several different wiring diagrams on the internet for this, and I'm a bit unsure wich one to follow when changing the switch. Which one would you guys recommend using to get parallell-SC outer coils-series on the switch?

I would suggest contacting G&L about the neck. From what I've gathered they do not typically sell replacement necks for a Tribute model. When I had an issue with the neck on a Kiloton Tribute model I'd bought they simply replaced the entire bass under warranty. However they may be able to build a replacement neck for you or take one from a damaged Tribute if they have such a thing. For that I'd contact Memo in their repair department.

Keep an eye out on the G&L Store website. They often have batches of B-stock Tribute and USA necks for sale at very reasonable prices. I paid $120 for quarter-sawn USA L2500 neck that had a few mineral stains in the grain. I later paid $60 for a Tribute L2500 body and bought all the USA hardware from the store and assembled a great sounding and playing L2500 for my son.

I'd like it a whole lot better without the split pickup and with $2k lower price. (basically a Kiloton without pickguard or control plate.)
The wood is pretty, but the overall coloration is just meh.

Add in that you can see where they glued the pieces of the body together. Extra 2K for the words "Custom Shop", I guess.
