Got my L2500 in today! Beautiful bass! I only got to play it for a few minutes as I'm getting ready to go out of town for the weekend. Very different character from my L2000E. Preamp and overall sound is very different, not in a bad way, just different. The neck is chunkier, but that's ok to me as I like that. I loved playing, if for only a few minutes. Already know it works better for me than the Sterling 5HS I had. Can't wait to get more time on it when I get back!

For the wood "believers" (not me) , I note that Sadowsky has also used Empress (aka Paulownia) with good and super light results!

From Wikipedia:

The genus, originally Pavlovnia but now usually spelled Paulownia, was named in honour of Anna Paulowna, queen consort of The Netherlands (1795–1865), daughter of TsarPaul I of Russia. It is also called "princess tree" for the same reason.Invalid Link Removed

I guess it should be Princess, rather than Empress?

Had my first gig with my L2500 last night. In fact I brought only G&L's out last night, had my L2000E out too. Both sounded great last night but that L2KE just has something special to it. That said I loved the 2500 too. I need to spend some more time with it to get more connected with it and figure out the preamp a bit more, really seems quite different from the old one. Same controls for the most part just seem to react a little different.

The number of windings on the pickups did go up in the 90s by about 10%, if I recall correctly, but were brought back down in recent years (not sure exactly when). Plus your L2KE would have the OMG caps in the circuit, and your L2500 may not.

Thanks for the reply. Yes the preamp in my L2KE is all stock. I had to repair it when I got it and went thru it all the way. I appreciate the pup info, my 2500 is a 2014 so I assume that the pups are back to the original winding count then.

I do recall reading somewhere that the old L1K and passive L2Ks had a lower resistance on their pickups. Don't recall the source or put enough weight behind it to consider it gospel though. Wonder if the L2KEs of that era would fall into that bucket, too. Might be cool to compare with a multimeter.

For me:
One would be wearing la bella deep talking flats (any tension, any gauge)

The other would be sporting Dunlop super bright nickels. I guess the super bright stainless would be even more different.

These are my two favourite, yet opposite, strings.
