I just bit the bullet, and ordered my first G&L! It's a US L2K, I got it off of Guitar Center for 750 shipped to the nearest store. I haven't seen any photos yet, but the guy I talked to said it was in very good condition...

And it's prettier than expected. I have to run to work, but here's a little teaser for you addicts. I believe it's late '95 based off the serial.
After a few hours disassembling and cleaning 'er up, I present the newest member of my bass family! It looks even better than I anticipated, with only a few songs on the front and side, and little wear on the back. I tried capturing the sparkle in the Candy Apple Red, but the artificial light made it near impossible. When I first got it the neck was very buzzy, as whoever had it before me had tightened the truss rod right up. Luckily I was able to loosen it up after a few tense moments, and now she plays well, if still on the high side. Currently strung w/ the black beauties that came on it, I was thinking of going with a set of flats. Any suggestions to get a dark P bass sound, ala radiohead? a few questions:
- Is there any way to find an exact completion date for the bass, or is it all based off the neck/body date?
- I couldn't find a marking on neck specs anywhere on the neck. I measured the nut to be 1.625", was there one standard neck shape for L2Ks in the 90s?
- I did the best I could to clean up the tuners with the aluminum foil trick, but they are still kind of cloudy from being touched too much. Is there any way return the back to their initial shine?
Nope, just assume the later of the two dates as the completion date.
No idea about necks in the 90s. The old standard was 1-11/16" but you could probably order whatever you wanted.
There is probably no way to bring the tuners back to original but I've had good results with Flitz metal polish.

For those of you who use basses with MFD pickups, I'm looking for a really high gain fuzz or distortion with lots of midrange. I like the Malekko B:Assmaster but the truth is, I prefer the sound of running my P pickup wide open and the MFD has such high output that the pedal doesn't provide a ton of boost in actual volume, which is necessary when you kick on this kind of distortion. For lower gain overdrive the Xotic BB Bass pre is great, though. Tons of volume on tap even when I'm running full up on the P pickup. The Idiot Box blower box is a candidate but I wish it had just a bit more saturation and sustain.

I use a few things to get the edge and I have an ASAT and an L1500.

On a different level I also have a Mantic beef bag and can blend the above.
Singularly or a combination depending on what you want to dial in will give you a really meaty sound and I run basses at all knobs 75% to wide open

All good to know. The neck feels a bit larger than my Lakland DJ, which'll take a bit of getting used to. I will have to check out the Flitz polish; they aren't bad at the moment, but look a bit out of the place with how clean the body is.
Congrats on your new L2000!
G&L bass necks in that era were either #5 or #6 and the #5 was the default. #6 were reliably 1.5" wide but #5 necks sometimes varied from the official 1.75" width so yours is a #5.
i have noticed there are very few M series basses in the wild out there (used).
Ed Friedland gives them big props in his review.
I played one a couple weeks ago (tribute) and it was really nice and more or less what I am looking for to round out my collection.
I think I am going to have to order a new one by default.
what's the story? there are tons of other G&L's out there FS. even the new JB5's are everywhere used.

I have an M-2500 Tribute. I'm a long-time L-series fan, and I'm quite impressed. It treads the line between a traditional active bass and an L, but in an odd way, everything is a bit more polite and a tad compressed. Nothing seems overdone. So, I'd say go for it if you've got the scratch.
I'd like to try an MJ at some point, but I can't don't really have the budget for it now and I've yet to see a Tribute pop up used.
There are 22 M2500 (all are new, I agree) and 38 M2000 (of which 10 are used) on reverb.com
Comparing to 8 JB5.
I sold my MIA M2500 after one year playing, letting it go was a very big mistake (the best neck ever for a fiver).
