G&L Club Part 7

Hey guys,

Slightly different question from above.

I may have found a good deal on an ASAT Leo Fender signature bass.
The vendor says its year 1990, and is an ash body, maple neck, but he does not know the number size. I am trying to get him to measure but width etc.

Any idea what size these generally came out as in this period?

Not sure if they did differing widths, but the radius is probably gonna be 7.5" vintage style.

That said, I prefer wider nuts, too, but I've got an L-2000 with the old #6 neck (1.5" width, 7.5" radius) that is super comfortable and easy to play. Much fuller in the hand than the old #8 profile, in my opinion.

Going to see what he comes out with but at the moment it's priced about $1000

Here is a photo from the G&L catalog which dates mid/late 1990s... Granted, it's not exactly the same, but there is a chance that the specs are very similar. This should get you closer at any rate

Hi Everyone:

I've been seeing some 1990s SB-2s for sale lately and I have an SB-2 on the brain. I've only played 2010s SB-2s with the #8 neck. I am wondering about the differences. Apart from the 6 vs 3-bolt neck joint and the truss rod is the shape or dimensions of the neck any different--especially the depth? Did they have different fretboard radii? Are the body dimensions and shape the same? Did anything else change? I'm thinking @Chef might know, and I'm told @craigb is an expert but perhaps there are others in this thread. I posted on bassesbyleo and Ken was helpful but otherwise, it's crickets. TIA!

I have an '89 SB-2 as one of my current main players, and I had a '06 SB-2 for quite a while before that. The '06 neck may have been a tiny amount thicker front-to-back, based on memory, but they were much more similar than different. The radius may also have changed - I think the '06 was flatter, more like 9.5" than the 7.25" of the '89. The '06 was also a tad heavier (alder vs. maple body, ebony vs. maple fb), but I doubt you can generalize about their relative weights. The bodies are definitely the same shape. They both played and sounded great, and I wouldn't hesitate to own either of them, or any other 2nd gen USA SB-2 for that matter.

That should have been 1.5". Wider nuts are OK with me too (up to a point). I meant only that I find nut width / bridge string spacing much more immediately noticeable than fb radius. No doubt others are more sensitive to radius.
