There was a fretless SB-1 in Fullerton Red/Tort. Rosewood board. Absolute beauty of a bass. Coulda been mine, but I had to spend my money responsibly...

Anyone want to recommend a new string type for my L-2000?

I want something that can sound crisp, mellow and thunderous depending on how I adjust the controls. Clank is unwelcome.

I won't completely dismiss flats, but I have come to the conclusion that these strings are too limiting. I play absolutely no Motown, R&B is a rarity and Funk is not something I play.

Currently sporting DR PURE BLUES roundcores, approximately 6-9 months in age. Thoughts?

For what you describe, I'd recommend Pressurewound by GHS. A few other companies make similar "compressed wrap" strings as well. They tend to be bright and articulate without clang, their break-in is quick and they seem to last a long time for me.

I've got DR Sunbeams on one L2000 and Fatbeams on another. The Sunbeams definitely have a softer top end. They're bright and clear but not snappy at all. They've got a nice focused low end. The Fatbeams have more crispness and scoop built in, but I still wouldn't call them clanky. I'd recommend you try the Sunbeams, based on what it sounds you want.

I put an old used set of TI Jazz flats on my fretless 2500 a few weeks back. I almost can't get over how good they sound. They spend a couple years on another fretless 5 with a piezo pickup, but this was the first time they were on the G&L. Plenty crisp, great mids and lows, no clank.

I'm not sure how to describe it, exactly, but I like to hear "the strings" on my fretless. I like a nice open top, without having to artificially dial back the zing, if that makes sense. I want to hear my fingers on the strings when I want that, much like you can on the upright or any acoustic instrument. I'm not talking about buzz and noise, so much, as the actual attack of the plucking fingers hitting the strings. The MFDs have great dynamics and punch, and the TI's are bright enough that I can get all of that without any clank. I'm really liking the combo!

I also recorded a rock track with it a few days ago. It sounds FANTASTIC on the track, without any processing. Fat, punchy, articulate... I think they might be my new strings on the G&L.

I have Sunbeams on a Fender Jazz, and have used Fat Beams on my SB-2, and I agree with this description of both. The Sunbeams are mellower, while the Fat Beams have a little stainless crunch that's wonderful with the SB-2 IMO.

I've been very happy with Dean Markley NPS Helix on my M-2500. They have good warmth and punch, but not too much edge. They're very balanced, and I think they might work nicely for Twinjet's L-2000.
