And for the first time in the same room....
Dare I say it - while I do like my L1505; my StingRay SR5 is a more comfortable player. I'd love to transplant a set of G&L MFD pickups & electonics into a StingRay bass.
Mostly the neck. The SR5 neck feels tighter, less of a stretch than the G&L 5 string neck.
The body of the G&L is great & mine is drop dead gorgeous,trans blue over a figured maple tiger stripe top cap, with natural maple edge binding. The G&L has this gutteral grind to the tone that cuts through mid range mud like no other bass I've ever played. I love using it for our parade gigs where we are on a parade float in a noisy 4th of July parade.
I got a Kiloton on Wednesday of this week. I bought it here on TB KT - great seller! It came with fairly bright strings that were worn in - I don't think they were the stock strings that come on the bass from G&L.
I don't like bright ganky strings. So I put GHS Pressurewounds on it. I have them on most of my basses (SB2, PJ, P) because they:
- Take a short while to break in
- Add some grind to the sound
- A bit mid forward - not ganky
- Are even from top to bottom volume wise
- Feel great - smoother than rounds but still sound like a round with less string noise
Well, I have to admit don't dislike it as much as what I've seen elsewhere, and I think part of the reason is that the label on the record is itself black. I didn't realize it before seeing those pics, but I actually don't like that the record will bring to the bass not one more color but two (in big surfaces, not like tort or swirl, which are multicolored but homogenous).
I wonder how the surface ages when used as a pickguard.

I got rid of the original D'Addarios nickels (hate them) and put a set of nickel-plated Lo-riders on. Love the feel of these strings but I'm not sure they're exactly what I'm after tone wise. Need to play more before deciding.
I've never tried the Pressurewounds before. If the B is not tapered I'll consider giving them a try when the Lo-Riders are so Lo they can't ride anymore.
I bet it's a Sabre pickup cover which is smaller than the Stingray. The coil sizes, pole placement and diameter, and mounting screw locations are identical between Sabre pickups and G&L MFD soapbars.
Nice looking bass. I've already got one new bass on the way though...big brown van should deliver at work on Monday....i've kinda at my quota for the month
Beautiful pair. I almost bought that gold flake one. Besides weight, what do you think would be the major difference between empress and alder?
Thanks, feeling super lucky to have them for sure. I would say the difference in the two woods (besides weight) would be durability? But what would just be a guess.... For me the difference is being able to play the bass or not! If it's much over 8.5lbs my ex-army shoulder falls out too quickly. I am for sure loving ol'goldy there. 8.2 lbs and super low action, gunna be tough to figure out which of the two take the top spot in the practice room....
