G&L Club Part 7

Mini toggle switch cap set from the G&L store.
Finally, I can play my L2000 after letting it collect dust since the day I bought it in September!

Interesting, I never thought to try a foam mute on my L-2500. But that might be an idea to try for the band I just hooked up with.

Prepare for one SICK bass.

I'm trying really hard not to let the honey-moon thing affect me so much, but the neck is fast and a joy to play on. I don't typically play a 5-string and it's been pretty easy to adjust to. The string spacing doesn't feel all that tight, yet I'm not reaching very far. Great balance.

The tone is great too. The Low E and B cut through better than on a P. The B rings out well. For a 5 string, it seems like a great choice.

I wasn't able to get a P sound out of the bass, but I wasn't hoping for that whatsoever. The closest I got was using single coil mode, with the tone and volume rolled down a bit. Its still honkier sounding though. Anyway, the mid profile shifts a bit to the nasal or honky upper-mids, with less lower-mids, if I compare it to my SB-1. Still plenty of lows though.

Anyway, I can see why some people say to own both a P and a Stingray 5H. I'll probably still wind up using my SB-1 for some stuff that wants for that thumpy tone, however the low-B and E sound better on the Kiloton, in my opinion. I've tried 5-string Ps and BEAD tuning on a P and I never got a good sound.

I was going for a light build so it will have an empress body.

The wait is KILLING me!!!

The neck is unbelievably comfortable to play. It's easy to reach anywhere on the fretboard and the fretting feels "light" for lack of a better word.

From what I'm feeling, it's a pretty shallow C profile with a nice round edge. The neck is wider than a typical G&L neck though, but it's hard to tell.

The vintage frets and 9.5 radius I think worked out perfectly. I know some people can't tell, but for whatever reason the extra "wood feel" and curve in my fingers helps me play with a lighter touch. I can't put my finger on it! Bum ta tiss.

The closest neck to this one that I've felt before was on the Road Worn P bass from Fender. That's the 1.75" nut, 7.5" radius, C profile neck with vintage frets.

Did you go with swamp ash? What did the weight come in on yours?

I'm not familiar with older G&L's, so someone else could chime in but the impression I've gotten is that G&L's have been much more consistent in build quality since its inception, lending itself to a lack of "bad" eras unlike Fender. I have heard, however, that some guys really love the early G&L's that seem to have a different tonal thing going on. Hopefully someone more knowledgable on here can give you an opinion.

Thanks Brent, that's very nice of you! Yes that's exactly what it is. Interestingly, the demon was played by a woman with outstanding makeup by the master Mr Dick Smith. What can I say, I'm a big fan of horror films and G&Ls!
