Just bought an EMG GZR P pickup for my tribby LB100. Will be installing it soon. I bought this based on reviews and overwhelming feedback. I hope it sounds that good.
My humble opinion: the GZR will sound great. Though maybe no better than the stock G&L pickup. The LB-100 tone (on my recent USA version) is gorgeous. YMMV of course.
I agree! I got a Us LB-100 a couple of months ago and it's the best P I've heard and played. I have a Geezer PJ set in another bass and I think the stock alnico pickup in the LB-100 sounds better. Maybe not as warm as the Geezer but fuller and more P'ee that the Geezer. More original equipment.
The GZR P is a very nice pickup. I've got one in a Peavey Fury and really enjoy it. I'd agree with @BassPilot and @R&B, though, that the G&L pickup in the US version of the LB100 (the only one I have experience with) is perhaps better. I've found the tone to be delightfully focussed with an interesting "woody" quality to it. It sounds fantastic in a stage mix, much better than the basement studio tone would lead you to believe.
Yep. Just sold a gorgeous L-1500 as for me it was too midrangey (and I love SB2's midrange). A Kilo doesn't have the B/T controls and desperately needs them. IMO it's just the wrong position for that pup. L-1000 or 2000 any day.
It's my understanding the tribute LB100 and US LB100 don't use the same pickup and electronics like the L2k series do.
Yeah, there seems to be a growing consensus (at least here
) that while the MFD pickups are the same in the Tribute and US models, the "traditional" Alnico pickups may not be. I think the electronics are nearly the same, just lower spec components and perhaps some difference in care of construction. You can buy LB-100 pickups in the G&L shop and it makes me wonder if they're what's used in the US models.

I can't speak to the Tributes, but the original pickup in my '94 LB-100 sounds fantastic. I was all set to swap it out for my preferred aftermarket pickup, but decided to give it a while. After the first rehearsal I played with it, I opted to keep the stock pickup, which I believe was wound by Gotoh to G&L's spec.
I don't know how they compare to the new US pickups available today, but if they're anything close, I'd buy the G&L pickup from the web store and go with that in a heartbeat.
I've owned 2 L-1000s and have played a few L-1500s and L-2000s. The Kiloton is hands down a better sounding bass imho. No clankiness or boominess. Granted, I do have flatwounds on it and they just sound awesome for this bass. With round wounds my opinion might change.
I bought a USA LB-100 a couple of months ago and it is, by far, the best, most honest P bass I've played. It sounds absolutely WONDERFUL.
So now I'm looking at the G&L JB's and I'm wondering if they are as true to the original Fender Jazz basses as the LB-100 is to the original Fender Precision basses. I know how the JB will play, I'm asking for input on the JB's sound quality (not the JB-2). Anyone....Anyone....?

Outstanding bonin! Did you get that with a 1 5/8" neck? It looks like 1 1/2" but facehuggers is why I was wondering.
