G&L Club Part 7

I've got an '80s SB-1, also with the blank wrinkle:

A couple people here have redone their bridges in black wrinkle--all you need is the paint, an oven, and half an afternoon. You might be able to search the thread and find details.

Hey Bonin, beautiful SB1. 2/3 of my G&L's have the wrinkle finish bridge. For me, it's the matching metal pickguard that really sets it off plus not having the contour break by the SB's jack. If G&L offered the pickguards I'd put them on both my SB2's. I know Amy said he'd painted a bridge with it. I've got half a case of it to rejuvenate the bumpers on my Isuzu Trooper and a big oven to bake it since summer here in the Crematory isn't far off.

I would've opted for that black metal pickguard without thinking twice if they were still offering it. I managed breaking my 1-ply black one, and the cream it currently has on just doesn't work for me at all.

Gonna see how I like tort next, but that metal one would've made me forget how much I would've preferred it if G&L offered RMC for this body shape.
Yes, I am very good at making a beautifully curved body look fat!

Is it just my ears?
Or do older , early 80's l2000's have lower or I should say less bass output than newer l2000's

My experience with my own mid 90's G&l's had me cutting the bass back usually.
I just played an 81' l2000 today, and with the knob turned up, it just wasn't "bassy" .

I also played a tribby l2000 a few weeks ago that had gobs of bass.

This was on Amps that were set flat.
Thoughts??

Dunno what you encountered, but I always roll back the bass on my '80 L1000. ...same pickup as L2000 neck. It's a bass monster!

There might have been something wrong with that bass, in my experience the early L-2000Es have amazing low end. Many fans think they sound deeper than later L2000s. Up until 1998 all L2000s had OMG series wiring, which most people find to have a more full low end vs the normal series wiring on all L2000s made after 1998.

Same experience here. I was fortunate to have two ('82) 2Ke's and a couple 99-ish 2K's at the same time. Much fuller sound from the E's....massive lows, and a way stronger overall signal, as well. Those basses are all gone, I just have one Ltd Ed 2K now, so no way to A/B it against a series-e. It's pretty hefty sounding but not quite as strong as the old ones were.

I have to say, I forgot to add. That I meant when played in paralell mode, not series.

I keep flipping back and forth between a kiloton and an l2000. Fretless that is.
The kiloton to my ears has a bit much in the bass, and not enough burp. (Hence its pickup position)
The l2000 bridge sounds too thin in paralell, but good in series.
Again, that's just to my ears.

There was some discussion on another thread in regards to finish options on the bridge and control panels of the early L2K's. I was kind of under the impression that it started out just chrome, then a transition period of chrome control panels and black powder coated bridges and then to either chrome or the black "crinkle" finish for both the bridge and control panel. This is only from my relatively limited observations and would greatly appreciate some input on this subject.

Interesting, are the pickups a similar distance from the strings? I don't usually spend a lot of time in parallel but my experience with early 80s G&Ls in parallel has been the same as series mode: plenty loud, good lows, full sounding. It doesn't sound the same as series but it sounds like a G&L! Do you have access to a multimeter? Might be good to check out the pickups to make sure all coils are working properly. You can also do a tap test with a small screwdriver.

I don't think the different hardware finishes were ever 'options'. It's kinda confusing, but as best as I can understand it....

1980-81 = all chrome
late 81, early 82 = sometimes mixed chrome and flat black
the rest of 1982 = all flat black
1983 onward = all crinkle black **

** Never seen mixed crinkle and anything else together, but doesn't mean there aren't any out there. Also no clue how many years crinkle black continued, and on which models, before eventually returning to all chrome. That may be a question for GG Jaguar, or maybe bdgotoh. Cheers.
