G&L Club Part 7

I grew tired of the JB2 sound and wanted more of the L1K sound -- and I had picked this JB2 up via GC used (they priced it as a Tribute but it's a Fullerton model with a quartersawn neck, lucky me) so the most cost effective way to get there involved a new pickup, a router, and a 3D printer. Straight series wiring, volume & tone controls. Exactly what I want from an L1K and nothing more.

GC used is the devil. I keep an eye on it (especially after the US JB2 for the price of a Tribute) and there was a US SB2 listed for $499.99. Fair condition. I couldn't justify another SB since I've got 2 that are just fine, but zoomed the pics to see what wear showed. Hey, what's that? An unlined fretless board? That I can justify. It should arrive later in the week. I am weak, what can I say.

I saw that online - would've grabbed it if it was fretted! Good price!

Sorry to bear bad news but you're about to be an unhappy camper. At that price I leaped as well, three weeks ago. IMO the neck is toast. Some chunks out of the side of the fingerboard with a large one on the E string edge at the 5th position and notes there on every string have a weird warble like the ghost of Jaco. Took almost two weeks of back and forth truss adjustments to make it playable as it was unevenly bowed. Maybe you'll have better luck. She's pretty and lightweight though. Second time this particular manager was informed and put a ruined instrument back up for sale. Last time it was an almost new L2000 with a broken off truss nut, the new welded on style so there was no means to repair. I posted about the fretless on the Facebook G&L page but forgot to here. I already have a jazz-necked SB1 fretless and as you'll remember, the fretless mate of your Rocket L1K. Update us with your findings.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check the neck carefully and probably end up not even taking it home -- if it's twisted I can argue they shouldn't even get to keep the shipping. Oh well, win some, lose some - at least with GC it's easy to return them.

I need a little help. I don't really need another bass. Or more appropriately, I really don't need another bass. But...

I have a line on a newer Wunkay in natural swamp ash that I can probably land for a good price. I have a Tribute L-2000 (MII) that I don't love because of the 1.75" nut. I also have a Tribute L-2500 (MIK) that is a great bass. I also have (on permanent loan) an ASAT that is a really great bass.

Would the Wunkay bring anything new to the table? I'm mostly playing Dingwalls these days, but this bass is one of the very few that remain on my GAS list. I'm probably going to go check it out this weekend.
