The original owner of my bass had neck issues and, when he sent it back to the factory for a new neck, he had them do the single coil mod on it. On my bass, it's the outer coils.
I've learned to like it and will use it in single coil mode more than I did at first. But I still think I would have preferred inner coils or bridge coils.
Tried both. Preferred inner. Inner had more of a mid range sweetness in any position, where outer got kinda scooped with both, kinda tubby with the neck only (though not bad), and nasal with the bridge only.
I think that folks who have the outer coils are specifically looking for that both-pickups-on J-bass scoop. That's a fair choice—and I did try it—but I have J-bass tone in spades elsewhere.
I chose the inner coils largely because:
(i) on single coil, neck pickup only, it's the same single coil mode as on my Wunkay (me like);
(ii) on single coil, bridge pickup only, I like that the one coil is a bit further from the bridge than on a J-bass, yielding—for me—a unique and useful tone (outer coil is where a 60's J-bass bridge pickup is);
(iii) the two inner coils create a slightly scooped but still very much MFD tone that's kind of amazing. I use this setting a lot.

Hey G&L Club, I tried my best to search, but can't seem to figure it out. What's the pickup and/or bridge spacing on the L-2000 ? 19mm? I know it's 1.625 at the nut, but Sweetwater and G&L are a little light on the other specifications...
I'm considering MFDs in a custom bass build, but need to make sure it'll work out!

17.5 on my L-2500 and M-2500. Same on my L-1000 (the only 4-string I've got).

Ah yes, at nut. How about the pickups / bridge spacing? That's the point I need to get down right. From the center of each pole piece would be most helpful, and thanks!
Look again the second snap at the bridge didn't upload
So we've got 18mm on the 1983 4 string. Gosh, I wish they had the MFD specifications and routing template up on their storefront
I'm pretty sure current G&L's are 3/4" or 19mm at the bridge.
G&L's flake finish is the shizzzz.
