G&L Club Part 7

If you think it's a monster now, just try a set of rounds on it. Once you pick your jaw up off the floor let us know what you think.
I love flats (Labella's ) on my Am P. But I tried a set of tapes on it and wound up taking them off. A little too mellow for that bass.
I have tapes on my Am Dlx J and love them on that bass.
I had flats on my L2000 and never liked it enough to use the bass much. When I tossed a set of rounds on it, was a whole 'nuther ball game. Between the new neck and the rounds, it gets a lot more playing time.

Leave it in Series is my opinion on it. I have the switch & never take it out of the Serial configuration.
It can get muddy though if I play active, but I leave active off all the time as well.
Usually the default wiring is parallel. I'm a little surprised the M-2000 is wired in Series. For the P style pickups, both halves will be wired in series, but usually if there's two pickup sets, then they would be in parallel.

My concern with the thumb rest is if it's not already part of your technique, it implies either using it or working around it.
But I play a 5er so a thumb rest isn't really so much an option.
I'm sure you'll work it out.

I really love the fit and feel and sound of my
M2500

Those pickups are sensitive to string changes, sending me on a bit of a quest, but that's a lot more affordable than looking for the perfect bass.

Pretty much just opened it! I've been playing it for about an hour, then took some pics to share with the world! It's set up pretty well; the action is a bit higher than I like and it has roundwounds. I have a set of Chromes I'm about to put on it, then do a setup, and start learning these switches and knobs. Right off the bat though, I have to say, this bass is a cut above any bass I've ever owned. Fit and finish are Mercedes grade, and I can't take my eyes off of it.

It came in one of those G&L tolex cases. Hell, I want to get a case for the case, it's so pretty.

I've got the same one, but mine is a limited edition Savannah model with the pau ferro fretboard & the quartersawn neck. It's also got a semi-hollow Okume body & Korina top.
It's a shame I didn't get the original case with mine. This one came with a TKL universal case. I did manage to find a case in the local pawn shop that I modded to fit perfectly.

The only trouble I had with it was the neck dive, since the body is so light & the horn is so short. That's why I've got the extra wide strap.
I had a little trouble getting used to having the action at 7/64" to eliminate fret buzz, but it's a trade-up between having some fret buzz & low action or no fret buzz.

I love this bass! Everything about it.. I bet it sounds cryptic ;) .. Seriously though, the SB's just look like they destroy a Precision. And now just finding out you can order pickups/parts directly from G&L, my P-Bass Special will get a nice set of MFD's put into it.

I did not know that - I've been jonesing for some G&L MFD pickups to try in project basses since forever!

Now that I have the weekend off, I can really get to know it better. This thing is a tone monster so far and I'm loving it. So much so, I'm over getting a higher end Precision. Apart from (even a cheap-ish) 5-string, I don't have even the slightest desire for any other bass.

Not sure how many G&L's you've had, but here'a a tip - don't get the pickups too close to the strings. Those MFD's are very hot and can induce strange phenomena when too close. Even at a distance they're hotter than most. Enjoy!

This will be my first. Currently, the neck is about 1/4" from the strings, and the bridge is about 3/16" from the strings. The action is also a bit high. Once I get the action lowered after I put on some rounds, I'll see how it goes. I know what you mean about being hot, because even in passive mode, this thing cranks

Hmmm, strange phenomena, you say? Such things must be explored! Bwuhahaha! But yeah, probably distortion, chorusing and even tone bending too close, I've had that happen with hot replacement pickups.

Neck bolt screw head broke off! What to do now? | TalkBass.com

This G&L owner needs some input from a G&L expert.

He's managed to break a neck screw and there's a debate as to whether G&L drills the neck and body with the same pilot hole for the neck screws or if the body is drilled to allow the screw to slip. I'd be surprised to hear that G&L doesn't allow clearance in the body hole for the neck screw since I would consider that a basic design flaw.

Please chime in if you can help!

I’ve just discovered this forum and I’m quite excited to see all of the posts by serious bass players about how great the G&L instruments perform. My favorite bass has always been my ’86 L-2000. It was purchased at the factory directly from George. A buddy at the time had an L-1000 and although he did not like it, I thought it was fantastic. I searched all of the local music stores in the LA area but could not find a store that had any G&L basses in stock. I finally called the factory and was connected to George. I just asked him where in LA I could go to purchase a G&L bass. He told me to just come down to Fullerton and he would see what he could do.

A week later I went to Fullerton. George wheeled in three racks of brand new basses and told me to play them all and see if there was one that I liked. I went home with a trans red L-2000 and got a great price on it. I have had many basses since then, but none have come close to my old G&L. I had to send it back to the factory in 2006 for a new neck. The original neck got too twisted and buzzy and no amount of fretwork could fix it. The factory repair procedure was a bit of a nightmare, but the new neck is 99% the equal of the original and it didn’t cost me anything except the shipping fee to get the bass to them.

I worked at the Music Man factory doing set-up for two years starting in 2002. Music Man makes a great product. Over the years I have had several Stingrays including one that was essentially a factory custom built bass. Great stuff, but they never matched the vibe of my L-2000. Three years ago I sold my last stingray so that I could buy a US SB-2. The neck is closer to a Jazz or a T-Bird. Between the two I hardly ever play anything else anymore.

Lucky you! My L-2500 truss rod broke. The bullet adjuster twisted right off the end when my tech was doing a setup for me. I had to send my bass back to G&L and pay full price for a new neck!
