So you got G&L to do OMG switching on your L1005s? Cool. I didn't think that was an option on these.

I've got parallel/sc/series on my '14 L1K and parallel/sc/omg on my 08/09 BABP reissue. Personally I prefer series to omg (heresy, I know) but it's fun having both and being able to compare.

I didn't ask for it. It just was on there. There's a more distinct single coil out-of-phase fat tone on the "series" setting, and it has the 60Hz hum that a single coil would have too. I'm pretty sure it's omg. I like the tone.

Craig - this would be a good data point. Does series mode on your recent L1K exhibit single coil noise? Both of Marc's do, and I'm struggling to get any sort of info out of G&L about it... Marc and I are both wondering if he got the OMG stuff (which would cause single-coil like noise) or if there's a possible problem with his electronics/wiring?

I'll check it out when I get home tonight. The room I practice in is way noisy (all the computers & stuff) so I should be able to tell. I'll edit this post with more info once I have it. I want to say yes, I do hear some single-coil noise on the BABP L1K in OMG mode, but I'll double check and do a direct comparison to the new one in series.

I've owned a few of the L-series basses with the MFD humbucker and the series/parallel switch - I briefly owned an L2500, and had two L1505s in the past. The pickups sounded...different in series than this does in the bottom setting (which I still think is OMG). A lot of that MFD upper-mids stuff that you get from the traditional series/parallel wiring is gone. Sounds more like a boosted single coil to me.

Greg told me to do the same, and since I have the bass in my office today, why not?

Between the three way switch and volume pot, there's a small green dealie hooked to the switch. It's hard to see in the photo, but it's there. Is that the capacitor for OMG?

What you are describing does sound like OMG mode. G&L is unpredictable :) Any chance you could put up a sound clip of it in OMG?

Here's a jam I did with my '83 L1000 in OMG - just listen to the first few seconds when the bass comes in:

I just opened my '14 and it looks exactly like ggvicviper's. I don't hear any particular hum from it though, and my practice area has mucho fluorescent lights. Now that I think about it, I really don't hear hum in single coil mode either.

So does this mean it's OMG?

There isn't a ton of hum in those modes. Is it OMG? Does the final setting sound like a SCPB with less treble and high output, or does it have more distinctive upper mids, characteristic of the L2000 neck pup in series?

Heh - I've never heard the L2000, and the L1000 I owned back in 86-ish is beyond my meager memory banks. If there ain't much hum, it does not seem as if there'd be a ton of difference in tone between OMG and series though, no?

There should be.

So, take the L1000 in parallel mode. Note, there's a bit of an upper-midrangey nasalness to the sound, almost like a Music Man Stingray might have. That's characteristic of the L-series humbuckers wired as humbuckers. Now add more output to the pickup, round out the sound with bass and lower-mids, but still keep that upper mids, though its a little less pronounced. That's humbucking mode in series.

Now take the single-coil mode, with an already low-mid and bassy character to the tone, and a decent amount of treble. Not really nasally at all, as it might sound on a '51 Fender P. It also has single coil 60Hz hum, though maybe not so much. Anyway, let's boost the output, cut some treble, leaving nearly all emphasis on the bass and lower mids, with a bit less treble. That's the "bass-boosted" single-coil mode, aka OMG mode.

Which describes your sound more in that bottom position? Mine is definitely the latter.
