I wouldn't be able to give you a recording like that of my bass now, but that recording sounds a lot like my wunkay-five in OMG. Love the tone.

Between the three way switch and volume pot, there's a small green dealie hooked to the switch. It's hard to see in the photo, but it's there. Is that the capacitor for OMG?

Thank you so much for posting this. I was wondering why the series setting on my '14 L1K didn't sound like my '81 in series. I looked into the cavity before and didn't see the cap at first. Seeing this post, I took a second look and what do ya know? there's the OMG cap in there. I didn't see it the first time around because the wires from the pickup kind of camouflaged it. First thing I did was grab the wired cutters and snip that little thing out. I did it to my '81 as well and have zero regrets. The mids I get in series mode...drool
Love that tone.

After I found out about mine, I had a feeling yours was too. It sounds too P-like to be an L-series humbucker in series.

...and it was the amazing tone from this very video that made seek Greg out to order my wunkay-fives. So thank you very much. One of the best sounding basses I've ever heard.

I'm hella bad at verbally describing tone, but mine sounds just like bhunt1's in what I thought was series mode.

While I am (and have been since I got it) much more drawn to parallel and single coil modes, this is a very nice surprise. Given that my original goal was to recapture my mid 80s model, the vintage wiring gets a thumbs up from me...

Wow. Seems like my info was bad from the get go... sorry for my confusion!

I guess the good news is that it's just one cap that makes the difference. Since it now appears that you all probably have the cap installed, you can now easily experiment with and without the cap to see if you prefer straight series or OMG. No need to source the cap to do that experiment. :)

OMG! Both my L1Ks (2008 BABP reissue & 2014 from Rocketmusic) are both wired for OMG:

Just shows I can't trust my memory! The differences I remember at the beginning must have just been string differences, not wiring (I've never had both strung up with the same strings).

I did a careful comparison with my L2Ks, one of which is a USA with K switching. OMG mode has the same amount of single coil noise as single coil mode. Series is silent like parallel.

Now I have to decide if I'm going to take the chiclet out of one of my L1Ks . . .

No surgery required. I'm keeping my amazing sounding bass the way it is. Thanks for the help and tips, and everyone is right, you rock Greg.

Now, I just wish the fret sprouting from the weather will reduce! My Fullerton Red one is starting to feel a little cactus-like!

Ah, fret sprout. The bane of my existence. The good news is it usually only happens once. Have the frets filed back while the air is dry (like now), and it usually won't ever happen again.

Sometimes a little humidity will make it go away (and sometimes it won't), but it'll just happen again next year. A good oiling of the fretboard can also moisturize it enough that the wood will swell and make the sprout go away. Fret Doctor is some great stuff for that.

I need to say - more people should own these L-1005 basses. They kill. I can't believe this is a limited run. More of these need to be ordered from Greg so G&L can make this a common production model, and more people will know abou them and order even more. A spark needs to be made somewhere, and I already have two.

I second this emotion! LOL

Special orders have slowed down a little bit after we had a pretty raging fall and early winter. I've got this thing where I have to order 3 G&L's every month to qualify for free shipping from them to me, so I've been ordering 2-3 basses for inventory lately rather than filling that quota with special orders for customers. I haven't put in an L-1005 yet, but I'll do that next month...

That's a real shame. I play medium scale so no G&L would work for me, but if there is a G&L I'd buy it's an L-1000.
