This one features a piece of lightweight Ash, so the bass came in at 9 lbs on the nose. We originally tried to order the bass with an Empress body, but G&L was out at the time we placed the order. They offered to find a light piece of Ash, so we went with that instead.

Does G&L still make the MJ basses? I don't ever see any on those lists of basses in stock at the factory.
I'm pretty sure they do still make them, at least I haven't heard anything to the contrary.
Folks aren't beating my doors down looking for those basses, so I tend to shy away from them. I've had a few pass through, though, and they were fine basses.
If anyone has been holding on off ordering a JB-5 because of the pickguard, the pickguard delete option now applies. It still comes with a control plate, but you can get it without the pickguard. Here's a stunning example that arrived yesterday. It features the Old School Tobacco Burst finish over Quilted Maple on Ash and an Ebony fretboard. This bass was a special order for Mike in Culpepper, VA. Thanks, Mike!

I haven't talked about my fretless LB-100 enough. It has officially become my #2, so it tags along with my Lull P4 to most of my gigs these days. It doesn't get played a lot on gigs, probably just 2-3 tunes a night whenever the fretless mood strikes. It sees a lot of practice time, though, I'm on a mission to really learn how to make it speak.

Looks like great fun - I've been wondering what sought of voice an LB100 or an SB1/ 2 fretless would have, can you give me an idea?

I love them both!
I've owned two P4's and 3 LB-100's, though I'm now down to 1 P4 and 2 LB-100's. I sold my fretless P4 because (I cringe to admit this) it had lines. I thought I'd need them when I ordered it, but I never really liked having the lines. Fortunately, I was able to cash out of my Lull fretless and get into my G&L fretless while keeping a little cash in my pocket. With Lull's price increases over the last 5-6 years, the price differential has really gotten to be... significant.
My sunburst Lull P4 is my main player. The neck is a bit different than G&L's. On the Lull, there's a wider nut and the front-to-back profile is more slender. I've been playing it for so long, it's what my left hand wants to feel. That said, the G&L neck doesn't offend me in any way, and I can play it just as well. But picking up the Lull P4 is like slipping on a comfortable old pair of shoes for me.
I almost sat down and recorded my fretless running through the 412 yesterday. I'll do that soon, it really does sound marvelous.
Here's a lovely SB-2T that arrived a while back, and I just now got it posted on our website. The top is Spalted Alder, the body back is Basswood, and the finish is 2 Tone Sunburst. GORGEOUS!!!
