Gallien-Krueger MB2-500: Part II

Dang it! now they're $449.........
Posted it as soon as I saw but it didn't last long. Was able to grab one myself and don't regret it. Guess they couldn't figure out why they weren't selling at $449 ($349 everywhere else) so they marked them way down to move them.

Wow lots of info on the MB2-500. Trying to sort it all out.
Is the general concensious the latest models are solid?
And is it easy to tell by looking at the serial number what revision the head is?
Would I be missing much by going with this instead of the 700RB? I love the small size and the headphone out.

Is the EQ voicing like that of the 5 string or 4 string settings on the RB series? I see the newer GK MBs don't have this feature. There amps handle the B string OK? I never really viewed an amp as the limitation on a B, but I know that is the claim in the GK RB documentation.

FYI, GK now has an even smaller head, called the MB-200, which is 2 lbs, 200 watts, and $250. It is ridiculously small, but appears to be a quality unit.

Sorry Tom I didn't know the time until that evening. It flipped and flopped since they had to be in Laughlin Nevada for load in at 2:30 the next day.

I picked up the latest revision (A07) in November, and it has been solid for me with no issues whatsoever. It handles the "B" just fine. I own a 20+ yr old 400RB and have owned a 1001RBII, and would stack it right up there with them in tone. I do laugh sometimes when I turn around and see it sitting there on the cabinet though. I've owned effects pedals that were bigger.
The 800RB was never real low B friendly. Lots of peoplke use them with 5 strings (Iwas one) and are quite happy, but the 800RB rolls off pretty high. That is what the G-K manuals are talking about.

Well I made the first step. The local GC has a guy that has been pretty cool as I have windowed shopped for the last year. So I went in and Allen got me out the door with a MB2-500 for $450. But they had to order it.
So the plan is to take in my Aguilar GS112 and Sadowsky RV5 and do a head to head with the LMIII, the 700RB, and the MB2-500. I know its not a band context but it will be nice to at least hear all three with my gear.
Today while I was in there I played the MB210 combo and it sounded really nice. My two in store experiences with the GK gear are great (MB210 and 700RB into Neo410). I dig the GK tightness down low and that trademark Growl. Hopefully the MB2 lives up and more importantly makes the translation live. But with a 30 day return what could go wrong?

I ordered a new MB2-500 this past weekend during the 20% off sale GC was having. IF I had read about all the problems with these I probably wouldn't have done it, but my curiosity and GAS got the best of me. I was hoping for the GK sound in a small box, sounds like these are hit or miss. I hope mine works right, I'll send it back for another micro head if it doesn't. I've really liked the GK stuff I've encountered before.

IMHO don't get MB get another 700rbII; the MB2 has real mfg issues s.a. high freq noise, bad reliability, etc. I just returned the 2nd one; it is a lemon
Hey been there done that; just send the 2nd MB2-500 back. With the way they designed (lack of any internal shielding with Class D pwr amp/switch pwr supply and component selection) they are bound to have issues.
