Gay Musicians

I just read this thread and found it very entertaining. I think it is funny that most of our open-minded straight dudes found it necessary to disclose their hetero preference as a sort of disclaimer when replying to this thread...BTW, I'm straight!
well look...duh! of course we're announcing it! i don't need the aggravation from my wife when i get hit on through pm's ;)

I'd hate to insult real gay people by trying to pass myself off as such. That's really the only reason I'd disclaimer any comments I've made in this thread.

That said, I am rather certain I am heterosexual - or at least am very comfortable behaving as such. But it might just be the case that I haven't met the right guy...

Yeah, I agree, I never understood it either. In fact, and I'm totally being serious here, I also find that the actual act of seeking a gay dude out and beating him is kind weird in a semi-homoerotic kind of way. These dudes are essentially willing to roll around on the ground and scrap with him because he likes to roll around and have sex with guys? No compute.

Oh, it computes. It's probably just what you think. Someone taking their closet out for a spin.

With the whole homophobia/gay bashing thing there was a really awesome Aussie comedian that made a great observation; what's gayer then wanting a pretty looking, flowery smelling petite woman? "Nah mate, I wanna sweaty bloke with a big hairy arse!"

I do a fair bit of geeky online gaming and you come across so many Nazis it's unbelievable, and it's great winding them up. On this msn style thing for gaming on my my profile I have the anarcho-syndicalist flag and one guy called me and "antifa ******" when I asked him if he wanted to play a WW2 game with me. Despite me despising antifa's very fa movement, and somewhat perplexed that a national socialist wouldn't wouldn't play AGAINST me with his favoured nazi army despite me encompassing everything he's not about, I simply went on to tease him and all that childish carry on and he was steaming. It's funny how a brutal fascist can't deal a mincing little wind up :p

Interesting discussion.

I always went under the assumption that music, like any of the arts will have it's share of homesexuals. I wouldn't be surprised or bothered by working with someone who is gay. If I did, I'm in the wrong business.

Maybe there is a difference from genre to genre, as well as region to region, but I'd imagine that there would be representation regardless. Maybe folks just don't want to talk about that, and I don't blame them. Sexuality is a personal matter, so it's really none of my business whether you dress up your old lady like a schoolgirl for a spank session or perform fellatio at the men's room at the airport. What you do with your partner is private, just like what I do with my wife. But if you want to talk about your experience with hairy bears, fecal fetishes with mistress Helga, or field dressing a deer, I have a right to my reaction. Same way that you probably don't want to hear my play-by-play analysis of how my dinner at the Indian restaurant got digested and the gory results.

But if your partner showed up at a gig, what's the big deal. As long as people behave appropriately for the venue, why should it even matter?

Has anyone talked about the guitarists, keyboard/piano, producer etc. etc. of Vampire Weekend? I believe he just stated in an interview that he recently got out of a relationship and was upset by it (obviously with another guy). He's an amazing musician and "rock" star.

I think a lot of the responses are aimed at saying that we strive to make this a "non-issue" in our forums, in that we want everyone to feel comfortable here and know that we all have something common (playing bass of course!) and that we hope nobody would feel alienated based on something that makes them different from others in any form or fashion.

Naturally, since everyone has been the subject of discrimination or verbal abuse (or more) sometime in their life, it's the natural reaction of civil people to try and compensate by assuring said person that their minority characteristic does not produce discrimination from those of the majority here. But I don't think anyone here will think any different of you based on this, and that's the point that many of us are trying to drive home.

A good idea is starting a "(Insert people group) bassists club" for people wishing to speak with or converse with other bassists of a certain group exclusively, typically based on issues or topics which might arise in that certain group. I'm in the Christian Praise and Worship Bassists Club, and discussing frustrations about sharing the stage with like 244,351,410 guitarists might seem foreign to bassists of other walks of life.

Making a "Gay Bassists Club" might help you find more bassists of like-mind, as you stated before that you wanted to do. At any rate, nobody will treat you differently because of your personal life. There are obviously people who don't agree with my personal life and how my faith relates to it, but nobody has thought less of me on here. At any rate...welcome aboard! The more the merrier here! :bassist:

I am an openly gay musician. I mainly play jazz but I'm also in an indie pop band, and play funk gigs. I only know 1 or 2 other gay musicians personally, and none in jazz. When I'm at a gig or hanging with friends I am known as Sean the musician, not Sean the gay bass player. My friends will joke about it sometimes but its always in good fun.

I think if you worry about being a good person and good musician first, the being gay part shouldn't matter.

+1

Be concerned with that which one does have control over.

Music is like the great equalizer. My band mates and I have vastly different political/social views. However, it all seems to be a non-issue due to our ties in the band. They still frown upon me being armed at practice, but we are alone in warehouse space. While the facility is gated, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

+1 to all that you've said here.

Hopefully your band-mates will never have to thank you for being prepared.

That is a slippery slope though, because I have an aversion to any group that requires more than 2 adjectives/descriptive words to describe themselves. Gay Bassists is already two and if they name themselves the deluth gay bassists well damnit that is three and against my rules.

Look you can be a transexual eskimo and I am fine with that, or a eskimo nazi, not great but ok, or even a transexual nazi, confusing but probably historically accurate, but the minute you call yourself a transexual nazi eskimo, I got a problem.

At least I haven't felt the need to disclaimer my own sexuality in this thread (despite my need to be irreverent in this post). Because like my sarcastic musical summation about "gay modes" and "gay scales", me being straight, gay, bi, or tri has no effect on my music or the validity of my thoughts. It is like saying that me being an a-hole affects my tax bracket!

Ok first off if you got a problem with a trans nazi eskimo this is not the place. I happen to be trans and I have never herd of or met a trans nazi. Probably historically accurate? What the hell are you trying to say here? Because the way you worded it, it sounds like your calling me and every other trans person a nazi and then claiming that it’s probaby historically accurate.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to start a flame war here. you are entitled to believe what ever you want but you should know that on this forum you are not always aloud to say what ever you want.

First of, it was tongue in cheek humor, and made use of a line from a Weird Al Song as the basis for the fictional group. Next off the point was the adjective amount to describe a group. Third off what I was saying is I was calling Nazi's transsexuals, not transsexuals Nazi's. Did I use it to disparage Nazi's yes. If that bothers you sorry, it was not the point.

I mean really I thought when I spent a paragraph discussing Transsexual Nazi Eskimos it would appear to be farce!

You actually took that seriously?

Sweet.

Years back I worked with quite a few gay people in music, hospitality and teaching circles. Almost all of them either said straight out that they were lonely, or it was quite apparent that they lived pretty lonely lives. I live in Sydney Australia, so there's no lack of community in terms of the gay scene. Please take no offence here, but from everything I have seen I came to the conclusion that being gay is a lonely existance. I think there are a bunch of reasons for this, but I don't want to get off topic.

BTW, I also don't understand why so many gay people need to have everything they do defined by their sexuality. Gay phone, gay car, gay dog, etc.

this is an interesting thread. i had a gay roommate for a couple of years, and we lived together during the time when he was sort of finding himself, his identity, and so forth.

he was visual artist, as opposed to being a musician. but he and i had very similar conversations, about where he fit in with the local gay community (much of it being centered on clubbing and "acting the part," as far as he understood it), and how he felt isolated from both his family and his acquaintances in the gay community.

not that he or i ever came up with concrete answers to these questions. and there's certainly no concrete answers in this thread. but it's a great discussion, and i think musicians of all walks of life can take something from this. great thread :)
