Gay Musicians

I agree. It just sounded to me like some TBers were questioning whether this thread is necessary because it doesn't directly effect your sound or technique.
I think it's a great thread!

Cool. I kind of ignored that and stuck with the on topic stuff. IME it's sometimes not that obvious what affects how and what you do as a musician
:D

An unecessary thread is almost too easy to avoid. Almost.

A Drummer that I was in a hardcore band a while ago's girlfriend loves the footy (ASSOCIATION (proper :p) football!) and apparently slaps him when he's tired and starts falling asleep watching match of the day, which is on kinda late to be fair. Apparently they have farting competitions too, wish there were more women about like that...

To further derail this thread, do gays all of a sudden decide they like the same sex and same sex only? Are they straight but somehow really like ONE PARTICULAR person of the opposite sex, this would make much more sense to me than coming out 100% same sex only.
I posed this question to a gay friend in college, and his answer was, "I'll answer that with another question: Did you suddenly decide you were attracted to women?"

NOPE.

Gay people have been discriminated against, beat up and murdered because they are gay. I am not gay, but I have close friends and relatives that have suffered this. There is more safety/security in numbers..

As a gay person, I have been beaten twice, once badly enough to be hospitalized because of just walking out of certain establishments. And believe me, I'm not the limp wristed, lisping stereotype either.

I've also been kicked out of two bands because they found out my sexuality (guess what our partners also like to see us play live too). So while I don't like to make a public issue of my sexuality (most people don't know until they meet my partner), I have learned to be up-front with it when seriously considering a new gig so there are no surprises.

I am honestly surprised how many people still do have an issue with it when push comes to shove.

But to the OP, you'd be surprised how many folks you do find are gay or at least friendly and accepting...

Pfft... Hardly. Have you looked at how all those straight dudes dressed in the '80s?!?!? Lots and lots of totally straight (or at least I understand them to be straight) musicians dress as flamboyant as possible. Look at Bootsy Collins... Look at that crazy sparkly bass he's always playin'! Also, if he wasn't in P-Funk, you'd be DAMNED sure that he's gay. That reminds me... what about Prince and his crazy guitar? Pretty sure he's straight.

As many of y'all know, I have a pretty darn crazy, flamboyant bass with a frilly pink strap... Sexuality didn't even cross my mind when I put that thing together or bought the strap...

I know. I understand. I was joking dude. The pink bass was a direct jab at Munji. It's kind of a well known fact around her that he has a Pink Lakland (I think it's a Lakland), and he has presented pics of himself playing it on stage.

I never understood gay bashing. I mean if you are a testosterone over driven male that is looking to score a female, why would you direct the time for negative energy towards the only group of guys in the room who are absolutely NO COMPETITION.

A tip, if you are a single guy, make friends with gay males, trust me they always know lots of women, and those women will dig you for being open minded. HEHEHEHE.

But seriously, if you are a drunk guy, and you couldn't score that night so you harrass someone for no reason, well that reminds me of the kid who teases the girl in grade school that he likes to get her attention. In other words you are displaying major signs of latent homosexuality by "gay bashing"

Now to bring this back to the music related question of this thread:

<sarcasm> I hate the way gay people play scales, I just can't stand the gay modes they use. </sarcasm>

Any questions?

Ken

Yeah, I agree, I never understood it either. In fact, and I'm totally being serious here, I also find that the actual act of seeking a gay dude out and beating him is kind weird in a semi-homoerotic kind of way. These dudes are essentially willing to roll around on the ground and scrap with him because he likes to roll around and have sex with guys? No compute.

"Dude, that guy over there looks pretty gay. Let's go get Greco-Roman on his ... !"

"Yeah! And if for some reason he's not, let's get Greco-Roman on each other!"

"Yeah! Yeah! AwrIIIGGHT! We're so STRAIGHT!!!"

Honestly, the whole thing of "gay bashing" is right up there with the homophobic myth that gay men want to convert straight men. OK I have met one or two that would joke about it, and maybe one that seriously considered it. However most gay men want another gay man, what would the point be with a straight man.

It is just ignorance plain and simple. It reminds me of this joke picture once, it had this pick of a two very hot girls at the top and they are like in the shower or something and said, "what most men think of when they think of lesbians". The bottom said, "the reality" and had a picture of two large women in a nice portrait but let us just say they looked like they could be professional bowlers.

You know at the end of the day ignorance is ignorance. As a musician though, you may play a place where people of ignorance abound. Best to keep some lifestyle things under wraps. No it is not right or fair, but one should never underestimate how dangerous large groups of ignorant people (or even small groups), within the presence of alcohol, can be.

Music is like the great equalizer. My band mates and I have vastly different political/social views. However, it all seems to be a non-issue due to our ties in the band. They still frown upon me being armed at practice, but we are alone in warehouse space. While the facility is gated, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

For you gay and bi TBers, does it ever bother you when an artist seems to come out for the sake of getting attention?

Lady Gaga came out and according to Wikipedia:

"She later regretted disclosing her orientation, saying, 'I don't like to be seen as somebody who is using the gay community to look edgy. I'm a free sexual woman and I like what I like. I don't want people to write that about me because I feel like it looks like I'm saying it because I'm trying to be edgy or underground.'"

No, I tend not to be bothered by what other people do when it doesnt directly have any effect on anything I do.

I like Lady Gaga, I liked her before I found out she was into women, and finding out so only made me think 'cool' for a quick second before it was entirely out of my mind.

I am an openly gay musician. I mainly play jazz but I'm also in an indie pop band, and play funk gigs. I only know 1 or 2 other gay musicians personally, and none in jazz. When I'm at a gig or hanging with friends I am known as Sean the musician, not Sean the gay bass player. My friends will joke about it sometimes but its always in good fun.

I think if you worry about being a good person and good musician first, the being gay part shouldn't matter.

Key to survival for straight musicians who find themselves in gay venues...

Just don't show up sporting your poorly fitting "look at me! I'm a flaming hetero!" clothes with your 'so last season' Super-Cuts do's and talking all lispless while high fiving and fist bumping your buddies...

And if you bring your wife/girlfriend to the gig, don't make out with her right there in public. No need to 'throw your lifestyle' in their faces, right?

Otherwise - just be yourself!
