Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

As a general comment, Neo or Ceramic isn't the issue, it's the particular voicing choices made by each cabinet manufacturer... there are some things that we can do with the motor design with Neo (that we have always wanted to do) that are just not practical with Ceramic. The degree to which this is done is a specific design choice.

Another generality here, 2 single 12" cabinets will often have slightly better L.F. performance because the internal volume or each cabinet is a little larger allowing for lower tuning options.

When using 2 x 12" in a 4 ohm configuration, again I would recommend using common sense because it is certainly possible to overdrive the speakers mechanically at very low frequencies. Not as much of a problem with our amps because we use high order asymmetrical high pass filters to protect against this, but with LF boost (extend) and LF eq boost driving hard, I would be careful. Nominal speaker ratings do not address this particular limitation of speakers.

thanks for the advice, I agree, I will be careful. This SWR Goliath III 8 ohm is actually a good match like you said earlier, but I still think I can improve on my cabinet.
I'm getting some complaints I can't be heard on some of the larger stages from my furthest bandmate. the other concern is if I'm pushing this amp now at 500w@8ohms, I'm 3/4 of the way up on the master volume, no shaping, preamp 12oclock/12oclock, EQ - slight cut to low, +5db boost to 220hz, highs flat, when I'm playing with these guys..moving to a good cabinet(s) and a 4ohm load might get me there sounding tremedous. at least that's what I'm going for. Genz-Benz has built a very nice amplifier in the shuttle 9.0. I took the liberty of installing a 1950's vintage mullard 12ax7 and man maybe my warwick 5 string don't sound sweet! I've owned some pretty decent bass amplifiers in my day, and this one is right up there with my favs, it evens sounds good out of the headphone jack!!

Changing to a 4 ohm load, and especially a more efficient speaker, might do the trick.

Finally got the new cabinets.
2 Bergantino CN112's with the Genz-Benz Shuttle 9.0.
The rig is now everything I thought it could be.
The band tells me they can hear every note now, it's loud and punchy bass tone that sounds great in the mix all of a sudden.

Yes I'm using the L.F. boost signal shape at this gig, and it was never a problem. I think it will depend on the room i'm playing whether I will engage it or not, this room in particular just seemed to need it.
Thanks for all of the advice agedhorse! I'm so very very pleased with my Shuttle 9.0 now!!

Hey all! I hope this post is in the right place.

I'm hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot my amp before I go the warranty route. I've had my Shuttle 9.0 for about the last two years and I love it! On my last gig, however, I lost my output right as we started our set. Everything was working fine during soundcheck. At the time I wasn't sure it was the amp, but I've since isolated the problem and ruled out cabs, cables, power issues, instrument output, etc... The amp fires up as normal, all the buttons work and yes, mute is off, but I don't get any signal coming out to the cab. My amp has always been used within its power handling capacity and stored responsibly so I doubt mistreatment is the culprit here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!:help:

I can think of a couple of possibilities, the first is the switch internal to the effects return jack is hung up and not fully seated. Try cycling a plug in this jack a couple of times and see if that resolves it.

The other likely possibility is a bad tube. Try plugging your bass directly into the effects return jack and see if you get some audio. The level should be fairly low even with the master volume (the only control that affects this signal path) very high. If this works, I would check the preamp tube first.

I see that you are located in Davis, that's where my R&D shop is, so no worries if it needs service as I can take care of it here.

Looking for the Rack Kit STL-RK for my Shuttle 9.0 and I cannot find it anywhere...not on Ebay, none of the dealers carry it any longer, it's not on Amazon. I have a email in to Genz Benz website, and I received a reply acknowledging my email, but no answer. Since FMIC now own GB, I may as well emailed congress. Does anyone know where I can buy one of these kits???

Hi Guys,

I have not TBed much lately just got burnt out I think. I had an unusual situation this past weekend at an outside wedding gig. I was playing with a 19 year old formally trained bad ass drummer and my 9.0 into two Berg 1x12's could not keep up with the kid. This kid was like a cannon going off. I may take two of the dang things next time I gig with these guys. Or get a bigger cab. I could not believe it.

Another great night playing my Shuttle 9.0. Although I've owned it and my NeoX 212T cab for 4 years, last night was the first time I needed to use the cab for a gig. Most places in NYC and Tokyo provide back line or at least a cab. So was I impressed? Yeah!!!
It was a very echoey club, lots of cement (walls, floor) and the stage was old wood which meant bouncy (hey, it's Brooklyn!)
In addition, I played with a rock band that has 2 loud guitars and a hard hitting drummer. My 9.0's master volume never went above 3 and the sound was so smooth. When I wanted to dig in a sound a bit growly, it was there. When I wanted to sound sub brassy, it was there. Such a pleasure after the previous night's gig with their crap provided back line. I think that for now on, even if there's back line provided, I will always bring my 9.0 since its so easy to carry and it just sounds so much better.

Can you provide any details as to frequency and slope? Basically I have a Shuttle 9.0 and Streamliner 900, and worry about output low enough to hurt my drivers if they become unloaded. I was thinking about an outboard HPF, but if you've got something designed into them, that's great.

Definitely ZERO issue with either of your heads. Absolutely no need for an external hi pass with these heads. If anything, the low end might be too controlled for some. VERY nice true hi passing control of not only the sub bass, but also the 'deep bass' that can sometimes get the cones flapping. Crank it up and enjoy!

I'll add my .02 here. I've owned so many amps over my 40+ year career, that I literally forgot I owned some, until friends remind me. The Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0, which I bought here, from a fellow talk bass member, is perhaps the single most impressive piece of commercially produced bass gear I have ever purchased.
I love it. What's not to? Only weighs four pounds, sounds amazing with either upright or electric, warm, loud and flexible. I've used it with a Euphonic CXL 112, and its' evolved, morphed into cousin- the Avatar 12 equipped EA box with a nice hf horn, and with both basses it sings. I used it with both that cab, and a Mesa Powerhouse 1-12 on the bottom, and man, it was just wonderful.
I've used it in a loud blues band with a EA VL-210 on top of a 1-15" folded horn, and other bassists actually tell me it's the best sound they've ever heard from a bass rig.
The only negatives? The amp has a weird gain(s) vs./master volume thing going on... and it actually produces TOO MUCH bass! Wow, that's incredible... not a problem! Even with those MINOR issues, it always seems to work just fine.
I'd love to see GB produce a shuttle bi-amp, that would be a Class 'D' first.

I've been having a little issue with my Shuttle for the last few months... I use the aux. input frequently to jam with playalong tracks and have been getting an increasing amount on static / hiss noise. It is pretty obnoxious. I'm not sure if it just needs some cleaning or what... thoughts?
