Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

+1 to one of the best DI's in the bizz.. I have been quite lucky to have some good soundmen on my recent gigs and they always compliment the Shuttle 9 DI...

My other amp is an early 90's TE AH350SMX head. That was my goto amp/tone for a long time, but A/Bing the Shuttle 9.0 to my old TE, I like the tone of the Shuttle more. They can be dialed into the same ballpark tonewise, but the TE sounds/feels a little smoother/softer to me. It might be the built in compressor giving it that, but going back and forth that slight softness became something I didn't like in comparison. The Shuttle 9.0 has a little more girth and bite that I like. Seems more tubey yet retains clarity at the same time.

When you dig into the TE it seems to give a little, but digging into the Shuttle makes it bring more bite and grit to the sound in a good way, imo. Like it smacks you back a little. You can hear that some in the recent clips I posted. And of course the fact it weighs about 50lbs less, can be run without a speaker cab, has the best bass DI I've used and fits into the pocket on my gig bag is just icing on the cake. Not to mention it appears to be really reliable and GB customer service is crazy good.

PS - I've had mine dimed into a 4 ohm 4x10 a few times and the amp doesn't move at all. I don't jump around like I used to do 20 years ago so dragging it off the top of the cab is not a big issue for me these days :)

Im wondering about it flying off if im playing a more hardcore show and the crowd gets a little lively again! Or if I walk and tangle my cable and pull the amp with me.

I suppose I could put the instrument cable through the handle of a cabinet.

yes...put your instrument cable through the handle of the cab first. I even do this with heavy tube amps to protect the input jack in case somebody trips over the cable.

Also, you can do the same thing with the speaker cable.

I used this with my Shuttle 6.0 and Epi UL112's. This would keep the head from vibrating off, for only $2.99 a roll! I still have plenty left!

Agreed, I love the DI. I'd buy a Genz Benz Tube DI Box for home recording or PA rehearsals and gigs, if small enough to fit in my bass' vintage hard case.

Not that the 9.0 is a trouble to move around, Im just lazy and would love a permanent headphone/recording setup at my apartment and leave the 9.0 at my drummers house/rehearsal space.

Also, the 9.0 is becoming a defining part of my tone (Thanks Genz Benz), so I need the DI/pre whenever an amp isn't needed. It would also serve as a good backup.

I've been very pleased with my SM12 and Uber 212 but find myself using the tube side 90% of the time. I also recently built a pair of 8-ohm 3-way 15/6/1 cabs with the Eminence 3015LF woofers which really sound best with 500-600 watts on tap (killer with Yamaha board through my Crest CA9). I'm wondering whether the extra headroom of the Shuttle 9.0 would be worth giving up the extra features offered by the SM12.

I run the EQ close to flat with the Uber 212 but engage the bass boost at about noon with the 15/6/1 cabs to get that low end boost they need. I've got 2 questions:

Shuttle 9.0 users, do you ever find yourself wishing you had a 2nd semiparametric mid to deal with a difficult room or does the current layout satisfy your needs?

How much lo/hi boost and mid cut (dB) do the signal shape switches provide? The excerpt from the manual below doesn't say.

SIGNAL SHAPE – The SHUTTLE 9.0® is equipped with 3 Signal Shape circuits. The L.F. BOOST adds low frequency peaking gain in the 38-67 HZ band. This filter is especially effective when used with a 5 string bass. The MID SCOOP switch generates midrange cut centered at approx. 600 Hz, the H.F. ATTACK adds a peaking high frequency boost in the 2.25-8 KHz band.

I have not yet wished for a second semipara eq, and have delt with difficult rooms. However, I have another para on my bass' pre. Honestly I rarely use the para on the 9.0 and just keep it flat with bass boost to taste for what ever room. The LF boost can be a little much for live switching but the mid cut and HF are perfect for me.

I agree with this assessment completely. I have a varied playing environment and my findings are consistant with OhulahanBass.:smug:

I was close to purchasing the Shuttle 6.0, but I'm re-thinking based in part on this thread. I don't want do this again any time soon (i.e. buy the 6.0 only to trade up). Problem is, I'm planning to start with only a single Bergantino AE112 or HT112ER cab and I'm concerned about the power mismatch. Eventually, a second 112 may be in the cards, and the 900W at 4 ohms would provide reasonable headroom. Guess I would have to go easy on the gain/volume controls :hmm:
