Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

Not sure when I would have time to record any clips.

I recently played a gig with a loud rock band and used the 9.0 with an Ampeg 8x10. Since the tunes were pretty heavy I dimed the preamp gain on the 9.0 and set the level about half way IIRC. I got a very cranked SVT Tone and was pleasantly surprised. The amount of overdrive one can get from the 9.0 is not over the top by any means. It's more of a cranked tube amp tone than large amounts of overdriving gain.

Excellent sound and excellent playing!
Thanks man!
Id still like to hear an example of someone driving that pre and getting some dirt with a nice P bass....more of a rock tone.
I haven't tried that yet on mine, but if I get some free time I will record one for fun. I have a J type bass, but I can dial the front pickup and give it a whirl.

Edit: I threw some together:

This is my Carvin SB5000 into the Shuttle 9.0. The gain and volume are dimed. All EQs flat.

Active preamp engaged:

Bonus points if you know what songs I ripped the licks from :)

just used my little trusty GB shuttle 9.0 for 2 gig nights in a row , it was powering my 2 bergintino AE112's and used my 74 P bass both nights , man I love that set up more every time I play thru it , it sounds great with all my basses , so many complements each night on the bass tone , makes a guy feel good , iv e been playing for years and this is by far my favorite set up ,

Has anyone used a Shuttle 9 with a pair of Uber 210 (or even a single U210)?

I saw Ed Friedland on youtube doing the Shuttle 9 w/the U410, but I would have liked to hear more variations on the preamp gain/master settings and more different EQing for fingerstyle stuff.
That seems to be a very versatile, killer rig.

Try backing off of the channel volume and increase the master volume to achieve the same level. I think you might find the overdriven sound to be a little smoother, richer and rounder.

Would adjusting the master volume effect the DI?

DI post is post everything except master volume, same basic takeoff point as after the effects return so you get whatever fx or compressor you may use but the master volume does not change the send level.

The reason why I would recommend, especially with a hot bass, backing off on the channel volume when the input gein is max'd out is to be sure you are not unintentionally overloading other stages that might not sound as nice. With a passive pickup it may not be a problem, just wanted to be sure you were aware of this.

Hi!

Thanks for that, now I can hear what is sounds like in a more traditional setting.

I must admit, I quite like that.

My old Trace Elliott (heavy as hell) GP12 400SMX was outstanding, but ive never been able to get that tone from any other amp.

Eg, it was bright, and very 'cutting', but still felt like a packed a HUGE punch.

All my amps now are much more old school and warmer, but if the 9.0 can do bright/grindy P bass rock, and also smoother warmer fatter tones, I might pick one up.

Im also interested to see what this new Genz cab is going to be!

I did a fly date this weekend... had backline provided and we were late... Had my shuttle 9 with me, but we had to go on . .we ran late..... not gonna mention the other brand head on top of the 810.. but they guys said they missed the 9.. I agree i did too....
I use the rack bag for travel.. needs to go to the shoe maker since it is getting ratty now.. hahah
but the whole thing works nicely... have local gigs this week and using it on my 112s cabs at home.. takes a lickin and keeps a tickin

Im wondering about it flying off if im playing a more hardcore show and the crowd gets a little lively again! Or if I walk and tangle my cable and pull the amp with me.

I suppose I could put the instrument cable through the handle of a cabinet.

I have a heavy rack and I run the instrument cable under the corner of the rack to make sure it does get direct strain on the plug/input connection.

If your cab is ozite covered, you can use velcro to attach the head to the cab.

Bungie cords run from cab handle to cab handle across the top of your amp is another option.

...Or make a loop of Gaffer's tape to put between the head and the cab (sticky side out) -- probably the least secure, but should keep it from just vibrating off the cab.

My other amp is an early 90's TE AH350SMX head. That was my goto amp/tone for a long time, but A/Bing the Shuttle 9.0 to my old TE, I like the tone of the Shuttle more. They can be dialed into the same ballpark tonewise, but the TE sounds/feels a little smoother/softer to me. It might be the built in compressor giving it that, but going back and forth that slight softness became something I didn't like in comparison. The Shuttle 9.0 has a little more girth and bite that I like. Seems more tubey yet retains clarity at the same time.

When you dig into the TE it seems to give a little, but digging into the Shuttle makes it bring more bite and grit to the sound in a good way, imo. Like it smacks you back a little. You can hear that some in the recent clips I posted. And of course the fact it weighs about 50lbs less, can be run without a speaker cab, has the best bass DI I've used and fits into the pocket on my gig bag is just icing on the cake. Not to mention it appears to be really reliable and GB customer service is crazy good.

PS - I've had mine dimed into a 4 ohm 4x10 a few times and the amp doesn't move at all. I don't jump around like I used to do 20 years ago so dragging it off the top of the cab is not a big issue for me these days :)
