Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 discussion thread

I got to do my first live show last night with what will be my regular rig: Stingray 5 > Shuttle 9.0 > Berg HT322. It's everything I need; switch towards the neck for fingerstyle, center for growl/dirt and mids for soloing, bridge for slap. Everything sounds super tight and full range, and I have gobs of power left if I ever need to turn up. I couldn't be happier. :hyper:

Now I just need to find a lightweight, smaller 8ohm cab that sounds exactly like my Berg for smaller gigs and I'll be completely set. ;)

I STILL think the amp looks ridiculous on top of that big cab, but I'm slowly getting over it...

just had my first gig with the shuttle last night , totally impressed , I knew I would be , for me tight smooth and at the same time punchy clean notes , cranked up the tube for some heavier tunes , only used my epi ul210 , plenty of power for that size room , plenty of headroom , played my 67 fender jazz , great rig , will try my berg ht322 next , thanks everyone for recommending such a great amp .

I just did a fill in gig for a buddy of mine last night.. i traveled light. with my shuttle 9 and a pair or 1x12s... DI into the house.. The sound guy and drummer flipped over my rig.. so did the other folks.. and that made my life easy.. I have not used my 70s MM Stingray in a long time and decided to pull it out for that gig.. worked great... The 9 is one loud little bugger....

If you ever want to trade that 70's Ray for some amps/cabs, I know a person that might be game. :hiding::D

Hi Roger.. gosh if you only knew how many folks ask me about that bass.. I should chain it to my wrist..:) I do need some cabs... mmmmmmmm someday soon..

One problem is this is a somewhat heavy one.. But it is a punch and clarity machine... I have recently seen the vintage market sinking somewhat which is a good thing.. a GC by me had a 79 black sting ray at about 8 on a 1-10 scale for about $1300!It was pretty clean and all original.. I was so tempted... now i wish i had taken it that day... Sting rays just slam....
mine is the see thru brown.. MM called it walnut.. others call it root beer finish.. it seemd to like the 9.0 too... im taking it on the next few gigs....

I just emailed you some pics for the fun of it..

Sure.. these photos are about 3 years old.. i need to shoot some new ones. Mind you this is a well played bass..and not in pretty glass case condition... and not for sale... lol
I bought this new waaaay back in the day.. it has literally traveled the globe. except Antarctica.. never been there..
I just wish this bass was 2 pounds lighter..

PS . since these pics were taken . i cleaned it up alot.. disassembled and and buffed on a wheel...

one more O.T....sorry guys. That's the one I had!! Bought new in '78. It is a pretty rare color..."Walnut" is indeed what they called it. My friends called it "the Prune". :(

I had an Alembic Series 1 at the time.. and it looked very furniture-ish.. that was the thing back then. .
then i got the MM. the new unproven kid on the block ,, and it was hitech and very cool... Im going to play it tonight too.. yup like yours Roger, this is heavy... If i knew then what they would be going for, i would have sold the Alembic and bought 4 more music mans.. and put the other 3 away to open at a future date... got to get a damn time machine...

I was bored, so I sold my Boogie Walkabout head and bought the Shuttle 9.0. It is quite impressive. No gig stories, but in the house it sounds great. It powers a Berg 322 quite nicely, and barely gets warm.
I even used it for headphone only with no speaker load last night for about 1 hour. Sounded great. That allowed me to find my favorite tone through the headphones, and that will be the starting point for fine tuning it through a cabinet. Probably more updates later. :) So far, I'm quite pleased.
I'm looking forward to using it at a rehearsal studio instead of whatever head is there. I just have to get 1/4" to Speakon adapters to connect the cabinets in the studio. Too bad the Shuttle speakons aren't the type that accept 1/4" as well. Not that big a deal though.

So, I have played through this head at several gigs over the last two weeks, in different rooms, and with different types of groups, and I was never unable to get it to sound exactly the way I wanted, and I never even came close to turning up the volume to even half! It sounds good with both electric and upright. I can honestly say that I have never had this level of instant satisfaction with a piece of gear before. I hardly even play with the 4 band eq (except for today, the first time in 2 weeks, where I had to cut some low mids because of the room acoustics). It sounded good right out of the box. Superb!

So I sent the LMT800 back and got a 9.0. I've only checked it
out at home and one gig, but so far.... WOW!
The 9.0 is much warmer than I remember the 6.0 being. The
low end does start a bit high, (at least on paper) but it easily
extends low enough. Plus it gives a little more low mid "oomph".

Again...Much more headroom than the 6.0, warmer, and
more low end. Nice amp. I used it with my UL310. Tomorrow
I'll use my Berg AE210 and see what happens.

I could use a little help since I didn't get a manual with my 9.0
It concerns the preamp gain and preamp volume.

I want a clean tone so I've been running the tube preamp
gain at about 12:00. In order to get any volume at all, I'm
running the preamp volume almost maxed.
The tone controls are pretty flat, and the master volume is
anywhere from 10:00 to 12:00. This is with a UL310.
If I don't run the pre volume almost full out, I get an extremely
weak signal. Is there any negative to doing this?

FYI.. the Mesa Carbine (M6/M9) is not really voiced for overdrive, and neither is the Shuttle 6/9. The Mesa M6 will most likely bury the Shuttle 9 in low end and volume, and the M9 will massively squash it... those heads are like freaks of nature volume and low-end wise. If you are looking for overdrive capability, the Shuttle Max heads have that capability, as does the Mesa BB750.

KJ, have you cranked the M6 next to the Shuttle?

The reason I ask that is that the M6 seems to have a lot of fenderitis with the volume knob. It went 1/2/10 for me when I turned it up, and didn't seem to get a lot louder going up to 12 o'clock-ish.

I would seriously have doubts about the M6 being louder than a Shuttle 9, given my experiences with the Shuttle 6 into a 4 ohm cab.
