Genz Benz Streamliner; Part 4

I almost ordered a Streamliner, but then decided not to and ordered a ShuttleMAX 9.2 instead.

I don't think that I will regret this decision at all.

:smug:

When the Bass Whisperer's new video comes out (with the 9.2), it will make some of you on the fence decide that the Max is where it's at!
;)

This review should be totally unbiased, can't wait! :hiding:

Hello Jeff, Hasbeen, Agedhorse & co.

I can't pretend that I've tried every amp there is, but I've played a lot of them... lead sleds and, more recently, lightweight stuff.

I've got a decent idea of what's out there. And, in their own way, they've all been... fine.

But you know what? I've just done two consecutive nights in a very difficult room with my STL900 and, by Jove, I think you've built the perfect amplifier. I kid you not...

I don't know wether it's the EQ, or headroom, the new power management, or a combination of stuff, but it really does feel '3D', with lively, rich, round punchy notes. Roll that bass knob back and add in some 200Hz mids, and the boomiest room I regularly gig in was instantly tamed, without losing oomph, wallop and definition. The band REALLY noticed.

This is something I heard all night at practice last night. They were all in awe of the sound of my rig. One of the guitards walked in and said "Hey the bass player is here!". They said it was the best bass sound they had ever heard. This amp is just great so far and that's 1 day of using it! Can't wait to really find my voice with it.

I'd bet it would be great, if you already like the NV215.

Yeah - I loves it!

It sounds very nice through an NV215, and a NV610, and really good through an AE212. Just played a gig last night with the 900 and 212. 50's 60's and 70's rock and roll. Excellent.
Turned the tube gain button off for Play that Funky Music and it worked great for that also.

I find I have to roll the bass knob off to about 11 o'clock on the NV215 and AE. Not so on the NV 610. Bump the mids to about 1 o'clock and just tear it up.

Cool sounds like I sound give one a try. Never thought my schlepping days would be over, but since I hit 40 even the CA9 feels too heavy!!!!

Hmmm I dunno depends on whether you'd be using much OD. The NV215 doesnt really like OD.....

I'm more of a tubey warm tone kind of a guy rather than flat out OD, I know what you mean though, my sons bass player used my NV215 with a big muff cranked, it scared the hell out of me NV215 survived.

Streamliner 900 arrived in Aberdeen today :hyper:

Studio tomorrow (will report on Monday) :hyper:

Gig Skinz bag on back order because manufactuer can't appear to differentiate *rsehole from elbow. Bass Direct have been chasing back order for months. Looks like my bag is on a boat somewhere between China and (I'm guessing) Holland. :crying:

Two out of three ain't bad (is there nothing Meatloaf can't teach us) and I've got laptop bags that can probably tide me over until then.

Ooooooookay ... post studio report.

First thing ... the Streamliner fits perfectly in one of these http://www.targus.com/uk/product_details.asp?sku=TSB212. When I say perfectly I mean like the bag was custom made for it. Plus I can get a 4 way plug board, a Bassbone DI, cables, pedals and all that jazz in there as well. Result!!! :D

I got about half an hour's goofing around time on Friday night. I have to admit that the first thing that went through my head when I fired it up was "don't let the curse of KJung strike me".

Everything flat on that amp - check

Cable into Barefaced Compact - check

Sadowsky Metro's preamp flat, pickups centered, volume on full - check

Play a few notes and ....

ok ... hang on ... make sure that everything really is set flat - check and check

Play a few more notes ... same result

Cue a little whispered muttering under the breath along the lines of "sweet zombie Jesus this thing sounds ace!!!!" :D

Moving on to the studio session on Saturday. I've got to put down parts on three tracks. 1 - a rock tune (think Spiritualised), 2 - a kinda folkish stomper and 3 - white boys trying to play reggae.

We're recording a post-fade DI from the head and an SM57 on the cab (rough mixes have a heavy bias to the DI)

The rock tune's getting a Sadowsky Metro with oldish D'Addario nickle roundwounds and the other two are getting a Fender Jazz with Di Marzio Ultra Js and new D'Addario Chromes. Straight off the bat the bass is sitting in the mix like a happy fat kid and that theme continued throughout. We were having to crack through stuff pretty quickly so there wasn't much knob tweaking going on but frankly there wasn't really much required.

Sitting down today (Sunday) listening back to the tracks I'm pretty pleased. Comparing them to other tracks (same set up aside from a Markbass SA450 as the head) there is a texture that is different, better IMO. This is particularly noticeable when favouring the bridge pick up. With the Markbass head some judicious knob tweaking was needed to stop the bridge pick up sounding too thin in context. The Streamliner seems to do that automatically.

Anyway ... long story short - variations on a theme of warm, fat and clear with some dirt if you feel that way inclined. If I was a proper session head I'd be keeping the SA450 as another colour to offer my employer. As it is I'm going to keep it in case some disaster strikes at a gig.

As Ed Friedland showed in his demo the Streamliner has a define personality but for me it's a personality that I like. On an side note this head has made me reconsider the pickup choices for the Sei Jazz bass I'm having made.

I've developed a big crush on Paul Turner's live tone and now I am able to get much closer (with the valve warmth and thickness). It's also more clear that there is a growl to the high(ish) mids from PT's Alleva-Coppolo that my Sadowsky lacks. I think it's partly due to the Sad's pre-amp, as in passive mode the sound is much closer but still the Sad's stacked 'buckers sound smoother.

Until now I as fairly settled on Nordstrand SEs for the extra low mids, but with the S900 I'm not sure I'll need it. Based on a good couple of hours this morning I think their standard split coils will be more what I'm looking for, in combination with this head.

One final OT ... but an interesting thing for someone out there ... according to Jimmy Coppolo, Paul Turner's bass actually has an Aguilar preamp.

Turner's live tone is great! He does play through a db750, so the Streamliner should definitely be in that tone category. Nice report!

Here's some clips of my playing my NYC PJ5, strung with D'Addario Chrome Flats, through the STL900 which is driving two Accugroove Tri115L's. A loose, thrown-together gig but fun nonetheless. Your hearing my rig with no PA support as well, captured on a Zoom Q3 recorder. One of the shapeless blue blobs up there is me, I promise!!!!

To be honest I think most of his live tone comes from his hands, bass and a REDDI...BUT...what his live tone does tell me is something what a seasoned pro likes in a J bass tone and if he likes the REDDI and the DB750 (which is by some accounts a bit of a one-trick pony) then I think it tells you something good about the Streamliner.

It's not going to sound the same but it is very much in that area and has alot of the same plus points.

+1 I get that sort of J tone he gets with my Alleva-LG and the Streamliner set flat right out of the box.. that round, warm, but still articulate thing. Really dig it. Of course, I'd also like to have his time, chops, note choice taste, and general talent, but Genz is still working on that I guess.

Did you move the recorder mid gig?
Excellent tone and chops. Your B string is clear too.

Never mind all that I just want his gig :D

To my ear he doesn't sound like a very "chopsy" player. I spent a long time today learning live versions of "Rock Dust Light Star" and "Cosmic Girl" and the combination of his touch with his right hand and muting with the left is just great.

He's got this lovely bubbly feel to his playing which IMO Stuart Zender sometimes lacked, although I think PT is a more mature (age and experience-wise) player than SZ was during his time in Jamiroquai.

Anywho ... back to the amp ... Streamliners w00t :D

GRoberts. I should have mine in time for our gig from 9-midnight at Kazimierz in Old Town Scottsdale. I don't know if you canmake it but we could mess around with it during breaks. Bring your bass if you want to come check it out! PM me if you're interested.

You guys are SOOOO making me want one of these. It may move to the front of my short list. ...Oh heck ...it's moved to the top of my list. Now I just want to play and hear one!

Who in the Phx/Scottsdale area has one in stock? Anybody? I could make the drive from Tucson in a couple hours.

Anybody played a GB SL600 or 900 through a single Berg HT12-ER Cab?
Sorry if it's in one of the 4 threads!. I gave up looking through all of the post!

Thanks!
