Genz Benz Streamliner Part 9

Out of curiosity, has anyone found the headphone output on their streamliner to be extremely dark/muddy?

I'm loving my SL900, but whenever I try to run headphones, it sounds like the bass has been dimed, and the mid and treble have been zeroed. At first, I thought it was just my Senn HD650's, since they're known to have a bit of a bass hump to them. But I had the exact same response from my ATH-M50's, and they have a much flatter response.

Completely, I might add, unlike what comes out of any speakers that are hooked up to it. And both headphones sound absolutely wonderful from other sources, it's just this amp that's giving me the issue.

And this is the best and most succinct description of the Streamliner experience I've read.

It's strange to use an amp that allows, even needs, such extreme EQ settings to produce typical meat-and-potatoes tones.

I have a 900 and an MB800, and I feel exactly the same way. The G-K is a lot easier to dial in under pressure. But there are definite rewards to taking the time to get to know the Streamliner.

And when it comes to engineering and fit and finish, the Streamliner makes most amps feel like toys- regardless of whether they're micro or full-sized...

I haven't noticed any kind of dramatic differences between my phone out and my cab. You might have a legitimate issue. I run my headphone out on a regular basis, and I have never noticed a need to dramatically change my EQ to compensate. I run a cheap set of behringer cans, so I wouldn't expect that to be the difference either.

If you consider the EQ of a vintage Tube amp to be strange then strange it is, otherwise I consider it to be normal. One of the most normal things there is. I think the folks that are thinking strange are wanting a more modern sound. Not really a bad thing either way I guess. :)

well, I tend to think that, honestly, the headphone tone simply does not do true justice to the 900 tone. Even with my reference studio gear (AKG 240 studio), very uncolored and flat, the tone is problematic. usually I use much more EQ with the headphone. I obtain a enjoyable tone for practice, but it's not the greatest phones out I have experienced. Another issue: the output level is unbelievable high, if you love a gain setted high for that elusive tube clipping, the output level is not easily controllable lowering all the other gain controls.

I did a bit of experimenting with my 900 yesterday and was very pleased with some of the characteristics of this amp .
The 3 position mid switch is a brilliant tool, my other amp is an Ampeg PF500 which has a 5 way mid switch that does very little unless the mid EQ is just about maxxed out and the bass and treble are cut and when the mid is at noon the switch positions all sound the same , on the 900 the switch has a very noticeable effect and works nicely with all the EQ knobs across the range, extremely versatile .
But what really makes the 900 is the little gain button, with the button deselected the amp is so clean and full but push that button and the amp roars with amazing tone from warm fat clean to crazy overdrive tone that Lemmy would be proud of, the other great tool is the combination of the gain, volume and master, play around with these and the range of sounds is immense, especially through my BF Super 12 .
Do you get the impression that I like my Streamliner :D

I found that the volume (next to gain) knob seems to have an effect on the 3 way mid switch sound, the more volume the more the effect ?
I like the tone with volume knob up high and master reduced with gain at noon .

I agree, I dont get the `leave everything at noon` thing, IMO the EQ is meant to be played with and the 900 has a wonderful EQ .

Streamliner owners-experimenting with your amps EQ is a highly pleasurable experience and is therefore compulsory :D

I am going to check tonight, I have never used the headphones out on the amp. If you have any further concerns feel free to PM me or contact the shop. Is there a way for you to send DI the signal out to another source that has a headphones out and toggle the pre/post to see if you are hearing the preamp VS preamp + EQ

Not a bad idea. I know the DI is solid into a PA system, but didn't try using phones from the board or playing with the pre/post. I'll have a chance this sunday, I'll see what I hear. I was also looking for a mini mixer, so that might give me a hint too.

Yeah, running the DI @ post-EQ makes for a very useful "poor man's REDDI." More EQ options without having to carry the extra 9 or 10 pounds.

Agreed - I've only used my Streamliner on one gig so far, but it sounded really good thru the FOH with a Post send... I always gig wireless, and always get out front to see what I and the rest of my band sound like...
