Genz Benz Streamliner Part 9

So I finally got my Streamliner figured out. When I first got it I thought I had a dud because I just wasn't able to get any dirt. I then tried out different basses on it and BAM! Amazing tone. I think the bass I played it on at first has something wrong with its electronics. Anywho, EBMM Sterling H -> MarkBass Compressore -> Streamliner 900 (Bass at 10 - 12 o'clock depending on room, highs at 11, mids at 3 or just past depending on room, gain at 2-5 o'clock depending on the song, pre volume at 11 o'clock) sounds fricken punchy and warm with a little dirt mixed in. Absolutely wonderful. Cuts through live like nothing else I've played (the only thing that came close is my old Shuttle 9.0.........Genz Benz makes such fricken good stuff)

This is the first amp I've played through where the controls on my Sterling really come through. No more "I have to adjust my bass's EQ to make the amp sound good" or "I can't use the parallel setting because it sounds like crap". I can set the EQ flat and sound great, and then play around with it to get different sounds (all good). It's also the first amp that when I play in parallel mode with highs and lows boosted on my Sterling it sounds similar to a Stingray. It's funny because sitting next to my cab is the old rack I was using and sitting on top of the cab is the Streamliner. I still can't believe this little bitty, light box sounds better than that 50lbs 6u rack sitting next to it.

I know this quote is a couple months old, but I just noticed that your singer reminds me of Jethro Tull, especially on "Sweet".

I use an MIM Fender P and MIA Fender Deluxe P and find the Streamliner to have tons of dirt, mainly with the gain button in, anywhere over noon on the gain knob and its getting into Lemmy territory, scoop the mid and boost the bass and the tone is dark and heavy, this amp can do anything :bassist::)

I just opened the box to a Streamliner 900 that has been sitting for the past 1.5-2 months or so. I was overseas when Amazon had the GB STM-900 for $699 so I thought I would pick one up at that price because if I didn't like it I could probably unload for not much less than I bought it. I just got back from overseas on Saturday and opened the box today.

I'm not going to unload it. I've been reading the threads on the equalization while I've been away and first thing I did before I fired it up was put gain on, bass at 10, mid on 600 dial at 2, and treble at 10. Gain and Volume at 2 and master to taste. I ran this through my fEARful 15/6. Out of the gate I liked it, it had the bit-o-grit I liked and sounded really good with both my Carvin B40 and my Fender Jazz. I twiddled a bit with the gain structure and frequencies to fine tune and I have found a sound I like a lot out of it.

Second thing I did ... Put white electrical tape over the LEDs on this thing. Wow! The Power, Gain, and Mute lights can fire a laser of light worthy of the Death Star. With the white electrical tape over the LEDs I can still clearly see the lights but muted to a comfortable level.

Third thing I did was try out but clean and grit sounds and different equalizations. 12 noon on the dials is definitely not my thing but if I liked that sound it would be good. :-)

Build quality top notch for sure.

I'm going to keep playing around with it for a while. Right now the STM-900 is sitting on top my my TC RH750 which is sitting on my of my SVT-7 Pro. Looks like a mini-Bowlus setup on top of the fEARful. :-)

I'm going to keep playing with it but so far so good.

I've been using my STM900 over my SM9.2 with my passive basses. but when I go active, I prefer the SM9.2 over the STM900...To me the Streamliner just nails that vintage sound. I can't get enough.

I have been out tonight using my new Antigua Jazz with my 900, loving the Jazz, I think I will use it for first gig sets as it suits the lighter songs and the second set has to be my MIA P DLX for the heavier stuff :)
One thing that annoyed me this evening was the strap locks, I have tried Schaller and Dunlop and the bloody things keep coming loose, really annoying :rollno:

The SVT 7 does cop the signature overdriven SVT tone very well, but doesn't sound at all "tubey" - it's a more processed sound. When tweaked right, the Streamliner cops the SVT tone in a very tube-like way - by that I mean in the way it responds to dynamics and attack. But I wouldn't say the Streamliner has natural tube compression (the Markbass TTE-500 has that in spades though).

My other experience as an SVT 7 owner is that the claimed 1000 watts of output is very overstated - the 900 watt Streamliner has more on tap for sure. To me the SVT 7's output is more on par with one of the 500 watt analogue power module Markbass models (eg. LMII, LMIII, TTE-500 etc)

I definitely prefer the Streamliner over the SVT 7 - it is a more versatile and tube-sounding amp than the SVT 7.

The other advantage the Streamliner has over the SVT 7 is that the SVT is larger and as slippery as a cake of soap - it's not an easy one handed grab like the Streamliner is. It's not that the SVT 7 weighs a ton, because it doesn't, but the footprint makes it quite impractical for use as a "lunch box" amp and really needs to be racked because there's nowhere non-slippery on the case to grab hold of it to pick it up.

I have thought about using Loctite blue or a similar threadlocking compound but I dont want a permanent solution that would cause a problem should the screw snap flush with the body leaving a glued in screw to somehow remove ?

Funnily enough, I have just seen them, could be the answer as they do not protrude so much from the body like the others I have used .

I just A/B'd my Streamliner 600 with an SVT-7Pro the other day, and was thinking the exact same things... Power-wise, my 600 seemed pretty equal to the -7Pro, also...

Streamliner plus EBS microbass = awesome!

At first I was plugging it into the preamp in as a radically different tone. It was great! Then I plugged right into the amp, even better!

Awesome combo of streamliner tube tone plus the mid range punch and clarity ! It was so cool!

Sansamp pedal , not as impressed. Still really fun to play with in the preamp in but not in the regular input.

Note to people buying and selling this amp: please use that preamp in! If u don't want tube tone, plug in your favorite preamp and use the streamliners 900 watts! Preamps are dirt cheap now! Tons of different tones are possible with this amp, you're not locked into the streamliner tone. I love this feature most of all

I still really love this amp and bought it back when they were first available. Played a full bar last night with STL600>Ampeg810 and just carried the house with punchy, warm full tone. Very supporting and clear. Had friends in the very back of the house that said I was dominating in a good way and to not ever change a thing, and they were also musicians so had an ear.

I have a Streamliner 900 and briefly had a SVT 7 Pro. I did an experiment with very stout earplugs in ear, and what I discovered (much to my surprise) was that the SVT 7 has a very linear master volume compared to the Streamliner, meaning that at noon (halfway up) the Streamliner is much louder, but when they are both cranked to the max, they are actually very close in volume.

I have had my STM900 for several months now and have tried it in many ways. I love the amp but, for me, the dirt from the amp does not do it for me. But then, I don't think I really like any amp's dirt. I do tend to like more solid state-type dirt from pedals. But we all know that it's a great clean tone that you build from, and that is what the STM900 has for sure.
Anyhow, you can use this amp so many different successful ways. I actually bought a Line6 HD500 guitar pedalboard for use with guitar and I thought I'd give it a go with the Streamliner. Why not, good for a laugh I thought ! Anyway, It sounded so, so good that I ended up selling pretty much my entire bass pedalboard.
So I now run my Lakland 44-01 into the HD500 (for compression, EQ, dirt (from the pedal sims), fuzz and Noise reduction where necessary. I do not use the HD500 amps sims for this. It sounds utterly awesome (through my GK 212 neo cab). The HD500 it also way smaller, lighter and cheaper than my old bass pedalboard.
The lighter gain tones using this combo are simply to die for. I can cop Bruce Foxton's Jam tones absolutley spot on. The fuzzes are really excellent and my Muse tones are very, very believable. The powerful onboard EQ of the HD500 also does help with the Streamliner's lack of flexibility in mid-tweaking.
The only pedal I now use is an Xotic Bass BB Pre-amp for my higher distortion (but not fuzz) tones.
Really, really pleased with my setup at the moment !
