Genz Benz Streamliner Part 9

I was just playing the Streamliner through the cans, haven't done that in a long time. It just loves to bring its tone to any instrument. Sits good in the mix. Better with my Sterling HH than my J through the cans as the Sterling is more diverse & cutting lows & boosting mids help add more sheen & character.

Just playing baby.

Miss my 9.2max in the practice room though, I gotta admit! I'm a knob twisting fool!

Allow me to dork out for a minuet...
Had an awesome rehearsal with my STL6 last night. I've been using it mostly just for rehearsal (real deal tube amps at gigs), but haven't been really happy with it. It's been a little muddy, and has sounded kind of dead to me, but I spent some time with it at home, actually doing an A/B thing with an SVT, think I got it dialed in last night, and feel like my sound just came alive. Got a road trip coming up, and I think the STL just earned its self a seat in the van.

Jazz bass with flats and a single 15.
Settings were
Gain button - not on
Gain - 3:00
Vol - 9:00
Bass - 8:00
Mid - 3:00 @ 2.5k
Trebble - 4:00

No more mud and lots of high content. Would probably bring the bass up for a gig. Sounded great and made the bass come alive. Very responsive to finger vs pick, and also my attack in general. I thought the STL was cool, but last night, I think I got it.

I also found a new tone with my 900 yesterday. I have been using it with a pair of Acme B112 Flatwound cabs with either a P bass with flats or a short scale VM jag with flats. I run the bass at 11:00, mids at 1:00 @ 220Hz, and treble at 12:00, gain button out with gain and volume both at noon. Smokin, fat, smooth tone.

I just picked up a Fleabass with some bright round wound strings on it. Hated the tone at my normal setting. After some twiddling I hit paydirt. Bass at 12:00, mids at 2:30 @ 600, trebble at 2:00, gain button in with both the gain and volume at noon. Punchy, grindy, and full! Bump the mid selector to 2.5k, and its a great slap tone!

I am starting to think that this rig is more versatile than I originally thought!

all these recent posts do is reinforce that there is a wide range of tones had in this beasty, and users would be wise to keep tweakin till you find "your tone", oh, you'll find it all right.

I AM SO SICK OF MY STREAMLINER TONE !!!!

I miss my 9.2max at the practice space & needed some more high end in your face trebley unscooped tone from the 900...

So I plugged in my Sansamp pedal into the power amp in... viola! Cool! What a great feature on this amp. Everyone has (or should have) an extra EQ, tone shaping pedal laying around. Its awesome to just plug it into the poweramp in when you need a change of tone

When you factor in you could have any solid state tone shaping preamp & the warm tube tone of the 900, you really have all the flexibility you could want.

How is it I have never thought of this? Nice!

Would the use of several pedal preamps (Eden, Aguilar, Sadowsky) potentially make the Strealiner 900 more flexible than the ShuttleMax 9.2?

No... the 9.2max has the same feature. Basically you're just using the 900 or 9.2max as a poweramp.

Hell you could even use the 900w as a poweramp to a PA system if you plug in your mixer!

Just a cool feature... correct me if I'm wrong but I'm looking at the schematic now. I THINK the only difference between the Aux in & the Poweramp In (Receive) is that one doesn't go to the direct output & the other does, respectively. Maybe theres no difference, I'm not totally clear

But yes... the feature is VERY important & often overlooked by those who THINK this amp is a 1 trick pony. Use any one of those pedals\preamps & you basically have many amps at your disposal :bassist:

EDIT: You also could plug in the 9.2max or 900 into each other & have 1800w of power & connect 4 (8 ohm) cabs... BAM !

To clarify, you do not connect the amp's outputs together, you send from the preamp out of the master pream int the power amp input of the second amp's power amp. You must use 2 speakers when doing this, one on one amp and one on the other.

Yup thanks,
How about the question about the difference between plugging a pedal in the Aux in OR the power amp in... any difference?

I would argue yes, simply because I don't know of any preamp you can put in front of the SMax that could perfectly emulate that fat Streamliner cushion.

It's much easier to find pedals that can give you a "faster" SS tone through the Streamliner's power stage.

TruDat.

I wonder if an Empress Para-EQ would adequately drive a Genz power amp section?

It would need to deliver at least +4dBm unbalanced and probably +8dBm to be sure you have adequate drive throughout the filters to leave some margin for make-up gain.

Just back from an early evening jazz gig.
62 ri P-bass into Streamliner 900 into Berg HS210 cab, bass @ 10 o'clock, mids and treble @ noon.
Fat and juicy tone on stage but super clean in the crowd.

Check out this clip from last week, around 6:30 for bass solo.

IMHO the Streamliner rocks ;-)

Very nice! Great tone, great tunes. Yeah, the Streamliner rocks!

I played my 900 today during a service for the first time.. and I got compliments from the entire band.. They all said that they could hear me better.

When I had a 9.0 & a 6.0 I used to run it through the board set to Post EQ.. I had issues as far as boominess and clarity goes but I never thought of changing the settings on the DI. When I got the 900 though it popped into my head because I was thinking .. if he is having fits wit the 9.0 he will really have issues with the 900 .. and then the light bulb duuuhhhh moment happened .. I set it up to run Pre EQ and BINGO!! That probably would have improved the sound on the 9.0 as well.. I just didn't think of it then and neither did the soundman. I tend to leave my bass more or less flat with a little boost in the upper mids and bass then tweak it from the amp. The preamp in mhy bass has what appears to be a multi layered tone control that has gotten me in trouble. The bass control is a boost only .. the treble control is the typical treble control but also with a bright setting ... the mid control has a boost/cut and a frequency control and in addition to that there is a passive tone control that also functions in active mode .. so it is so easy to either get a multitude of tones or go off into OZ with the sounds if I am not careful. I know I said this when I got my 9.0 but I think I am pretty much set amp wise for a long time. I have a AG Tri115 that i want to try .. I wonder how my old 1212L would have sounded with this head.. This morning I played it through my B212... and as I said it sounded great .. but I think I may have an issue with that cab, which of course is another thread.
