Genz Benz Streamliner-Pt 2

me too, but my wife went to bed so I used this opportunity to email my local bass gear vendor (and, if that doesn't pan out I'll try the Rocket)...

Sounds like this head should work great for a classic rock cover band I'm doing... Hope it matches OK with my Berg AE410 or GB 212's...

I have a feeling this head would be just stoopid with the AE410. Possibly a good match. I was playing through a 2x8, a horn, and 1x15. Maybe that's why both amps sounded so good. Hmmm....

I have heard it. Just got back from NAMM today, spent some time talking with Jeff about this amp and listening to him play through it for a while. Tone-wise, it absolutely rocks. Very warm and fat sounding ... dare I say SVT sounding? Yes.

Well, there it is. It's what we have been waiting for. The very first "tone" report in post #215.

Why do I all of a sudden feel excessively bloated with GAS!

Before we get all covered up with SVT bliss (which I'm sure the Streamliner will do) Jeff said it would cover SA-200 territory very well also and that is far from SVT IMO.

My 9,0 will get really stinking close to a cranked SVT plugged into an SVT 8x10, dimed, and EQ'ed just so, using a passive 4 string P Bass but it will go miles from that into a Hi Fi Cab with a 5 String Active Bass.

Thanks for this;)

Chef, I know you are a walkabout fan. I played this thing for about 30 minutes on thursday and it is very close to that sound. I still think the walkabout has better tube saturation, but the headroom on the 900 is just awesome.

This will be my next amp.

In fact I asked Jeff if this was essentially a 6 lb. SVT and he thought that was a fair description. He wanted the amp to give what a "vintage tube" tone preferring player would want but in a design package that looked unique and substantial.

Just when I decided that I could live with the low power but superior tone / dynamics of my Walkabout (which I consider 13lbs of SVT'ish tone) you write this....

You entirely cured my GAS for this amp with that sentence. ;) Thank you, one less candidate is always a good thing. :)

The Sadowsky SA-200 is a different animal from the SVT (although, maybe mostly a midrange difference if the SVT is not overdriven), but as Red Planet says above Jeff indicated it can cover a variety of tone zones.

From what I've heard from owners the SA-200 is a clean, balanced, fast-responding tone machine that still has the 3-D tube-lishiousness to the sound.

I would think anyone even remotely considering it should at least audition the Streamliner before dismissing it.

As Andy said when I plugged a p-bass into the streamliner 900 "you can tell the guys on TB it actually exists". It exists, and it kicks @$$. I had to sit through some dude playing a pedulla through it for about 10 minutes, but when my turn came I went straight for the precision... and my pick! I didn't mess with the eq really, but it sounded glorious set flat. For fun I asked Andy to really crank the gain, and this thing can get really dirty. It maintained a good sense of articulation, though I'd probably still use a stompbox for that kind of all out snarl.

As far as pickstyle precision tones go, this was pretty much exactly what I'd want... solid, thick, warm, grit if you want it... exactly what I want in a classic rock tone. If I hadn't JUST bought a walkabout stack I'd be all over this. As it is I'll still get one when I'm able to afford it-- and when the lil lady will allow it.

For anyone interested in this thing: it does what they say it does. And the brushed metal exterior looks even better in person...

Got to mess with this today. It sounds like all that and a bag of chips. I dialed up a variety of tones from clean to über dirty. Impressive tone. Rounder than the GK Fusion and a better overdrive tone (imho). I haven't played a Walkabout so I can't compare to that. Excellent size/shape/heft - very substantial feel. This is no toy. No sharks with laser beams (yet), but this head will be a huge hit and I'm glad I pre-ordered. No regrets there. Plus I got to meet the GB guys - great bunch. Jeff even signed a copy of the new "Mako" model amp photo.

btw, the Über Quad cabinet sounds sick.

I was there while the drum circle was roaring along. Two bassists were taking turns playing along, pushing two Uber Quads with a 9.0 and it sounded especially great before the SPL cops showed up; one was playing the six-string fretless, which sounded full, strong, and articulate. Never got to hear the Streamliner under circumstances that would allow me to draw a meaningful conclusion.

Next year all of the TBers who attend should affix a concpicuous sticker on their NAMM credentials so we'll be able to identify each other. ;)
