Had to laugh last night folks. We were playing a quite large a private party and cook-out, BTW the band is a Rock n Roll and 70s and 80s hits band. Kinda of with an edge.. I had my MG 800 with my Schroeder PL 12 and Schroeder 12-12L hooked up, no send to the PA. BTW Guitarist is running dual Mesas with eight twelves on stage.
Had an edge attitude setup on the amp, with my USA Spector NS4s. Maybe a little mid and some punch. Everyone was digging it, stage vol. was up there and we were cooking. Even getting compliments from all there in the audience. Then some Oompappa bass player says to me at break, the bass is too hot. I check around the crowd including other musicians I know and other friends and family members that have been to countless gigs, and they say no it's cookin' out there (BTW 7 piece band with even a trumpet at times). Oh yeah, the mix was done by a Pro sound guy in our area that had done concerts with almost every Pro that travels though here.
Come to find out this Bassist was a C&W bass player with only a few years under his belt, been playing with a lite weight Ampeg head with a 20 to 25 year old Peavy cabinet for the last 15 years. Takin' a backseat to the rest of the C&W band.. His first bass was a 5 string P bass that he still plays only (I assume his only bass), no problem there - but they didn't even make 5 string basses when I started playin bass in the 60s. My first bass was a Lafayette 4 string (go look that one up). That was gone decades ago. LOL. It took me years to afford a real Hofner, much less a real EBO or Les Paul Bass, or others.
But the MG 800 cut through like a knife, and be careful of who comes up and talks with you at a gig that claims to be a bassist with an ear for sound. They may have no clue about what the sound is supposed to sound like. And may only be used to a junk 25 year old Peavy cabinet and an old Ampeg head that buries them into a C&W mix into the PA in a beer joint.
