They can. I played my cheap 4 string last night at home for a while. It was fine. I imagine a really nice 4 string would be better. But then I took out the Roscoe 5 for a few minutes and bam, the sound and feel were right there. I think the E string benefits from the additional neck mass. E strings on a 5 string (low B) just seem to sound better than an E string on a 4 string.Well, some things can be changed, my friend!

A Roscoe bass is a beautiful thing to play, and when it's a 5'er... even better! IMHO
...I tried playing a 4 string bass and it's really feels odd in mu hands.
With a 4 string bass, my hand is telling my brain, 'something is missing!

Yep, I do. Not a big flats guy though. I like rounds for more mwah. I'd give the flats a try before I changed them. Gotta be open to new things.@SteveC, did I mention that there are lightly used TI Jazz Flats on it? And you know what they cost!
