Oh, I'll tease you with one right now, and thank you for asking... 
They can. I played my cheap 4 string last night at home for a while. It was fine. I imagine a really nice 4 string would be better. But then I took out the Roscoe 5 for a few minutes and bam, the sound and feel were right there. I think the E string benefits from the additional neck mass. E strings on a 5 string (low B) just seem to sound better than an E string on a 4 string.
A Roscoe bass is a beautiful thing to play, and when it's a 5'er... even better! IMHO
I can play my 6 strings guitars and not have too much of an issue, but I tried playing a 4 string bass and it really feels odd in my hands.
A 6 string bass plays nicely, but sometimes my muscle memory forgets what it's doing, so I only play 5'ers and not waste coins on a 4 or 6 string bass.
For sure. Especially through a Genzler rig. Their 5 string necks are just magical. The 4 and 6 are great as well, best paying 6 ever, but the 5 really ticks all my boxes.
Yep. Try as I might to play a 4 string for anything more than just messing around at home, I just don't feel at home on it. I'd love to give that P at Rocket a try, but I'm afraid it'd just sit in the corner and never see a gig.
With a 4 string bass, my hand is telling my brain, 'something is missing!', then everything else accepts that and it's down hill from there. There was one 4 string Roscoe a while back that was for sale. It had the block inlays and just stunning. I wanted it because it was a beautiful looking bass, but I knew it wouldn't get played much, if any.
A fretless 5 on the other hand...

@SteveC, did I mention that there are lightly used TI Jazz Flats on it? And you know what they cost!
You won’t get more mwah than what good flats like TI’s wi give you. Especially on a fretless bass.
Sorry for the thread derail Genzler folks. I do use a Genzler amp.
I’ll be honest I can take TI’s and make them sound about like Rounds. Just thicker and fatter sounding.
