Genzler Amplification Club

I play POP, RnB, Blues, some dance, Real Book type gigs, Hard Blues, Rock with some fairly Loud and world famous guitar players.. And all with my Genzler head.
I use different cabs either one or a pair of older Genz Uber 115s that serve me well , or a Form factor 210.. .. But the genzler 800 can do all of those gigs and get me a tone real fast.
I;ve never had it so easy

YOu can approximate the TH500 effect with Contour B on the magellan .. Or go the other direction for a cleaner more modern sound with Contour A

The EQ is very simple yet effective on the magellan.. In my opinion it has a feeling of more horsepower than the TH500 too.. just my opinion

Anyways, how versatile soundwise is the Genzler rig? I am mostly a rock and blues guy, not much of a slapper, but starting to get into jazz, and do have a NS design eub that I am fond of. Not looking for super twinky treble, but can it do a muscular rock tone?

FYI, I am coming from an Aguilar TH500 w/ 2 SL112's, which I did dig, but I felt it was a bit of a one trick pony (although I did like that trick).

The Magellan is incredibly versatile. You can find any tone you want in this amp. And, you can find any tone you want very easily.
The contour buttons and two channels offer a ton of options before you even start tweaking the EQ.

So you've gotten some responses regarding the head... now the BA12-3 cab...

I play fretless in a variety of situations from a very versatile church band that does a wide variety of styles to two guitar based original pop bands and a couple of singer songwriters. I moved to the BA12-3 from an Acme B2. The Acme was a bot too pillowy for me and the mids were a bit overwhelmed by what was going on underneath. I wanted a tighter bottom, vocal mids, and a sweet treble that wasn't harsh. I got all of that in the BA12-3. The sound guy at the church missed the huge bottom end of the Acme but the band loved the better dispersion of the Genzler. They all said they could hear me better and liked what they heard better.

I use a single cab (with a Genz Benz shuttle 9.0 head) and it has been enough for all of my uses thus far. I'm sure there are settings where a second one would be helpful both for more volume and for the way that it would increase the effect of the line array and further strengthen the bottom. Also, with a single cab I have found that it is necessary to get the cab off the floor or at least pointed upward for me to hear it well. It is a rather sort cab and sitting on the floor, it goes right at my calves.

I am really happy with the BA12-3 and can't imagine a setting that it (they) would not work well for.

I kind of got that from the reviews I've read, and some of the youtube demos as well, but glad to hear it from a working pro as well.

I'm seriously considering the MG800. After reading this thread, and the manual as well, I have a minor (yet important to me) question to ask. Does plugging a headphone jack into the "phones" output disable the speaker outputs ?

No it doesn't. You'd have to unplug your cab for silence.

Thank you. That's good news. For reasons that I won't go into...I think that it is a flawed design, if it doesn't work this way. No surprise, Jeff Genzler knows his stuff !!

Thanks Husky123 for the back up. @DuShauh, Yes, we've never considered using circuitry that defeats the speaker output when using headphones. While this might be a more common practice for small low-powered combos, it is not something we would consider for high powered, professional products. The power amplifier in the MG-800 is designed to operate safely without a speaker load so when using headphones, just unplugging the speaker is the best way to do this.

I've been able to use the magellan head with several cabs now and it just plain works. Some cabs like the clean channel and some like the od channel run clean. I like the filters but, still would have preceded to have a secon mid instead, because it's a good sounding semi-parametric design. I would say that it's the best overall gig amp right now.

Good job on the preamp of this amp.. I have found that the S/N level is very good. I can BOOST the upper mids alot if i wanted too and there is minimal if any noise.. Ive used the amp at times to send my In Ear Mix.. its clean and quiet and very musical

Hello,
I would like to let you know at the first place, that I'm not expdrienced amp owner. Laney 165W 15 inch combo when I was 17, than Ampeg Micro VR/Eden EX110 cute-stack at 31. I wanted to upgrade and get some lighter, smaller head. And this Bass Array cab! So after weeks of reading and mailing with Jeff Genzler personally (he is a kind guy) I bought Magellan and 1 BA 12-3 cabinet.

I am really suprised! I think this rig changed my understanding of what good amplification means. I like the neck pickup on my bass with it - really woody sound!

I've recorded a demonstration. The equipment was Zoom H4n stereo field recorder. Magellan + Bass Array at living room volume. Recorded from 50 cm (20 inches) distance. 3 unisono bass lines in loop. First one clean, other two layers overdriven on 2 different distortion pedals. Preamp's EQ set flat - demonstrating both contour shapes on clean and dirt channels. Last loop is EQing with both MXR M81 Bass Preamp and with Magellan's tone stack.

I also added some guitar to the previous loop. The signal from looper is once more processed via pedal board connected in amp's FX loop. Compressor, ADT chorus, reverb, overdrives...
