How hard have you pushed them (3 ba12-3's)? How soon does the MG-800 start to fart out, if at all? Just curious because essentially you're under powering the cabs running an 2.67 ohm load at 800w into 1050w worth of speaker.

I've done two outside gigs with no PA support, and a very loud inside gig (where low end control was actually more important than overall volume), and the rig performs very well. Personally, I don't believe that "under-powering" is ever going to be an issue with the BA12-3 cabs. While they have a fairly high power handling capacity, they are also fairly efficient, and they sound/perform great, even when you are not pushing them very hard.

Agreed, there really is no "underpowering". I tried a 200 w amp with a single modern 12 and stuck my head down to listen to the cab and hit a note. Whoops..the master volume was 3/4 up. Won't do that again. We only need to have enough power to easily hit a certain volume. As Tom says, speaker system (speaker + cab) efficiency has a lot to do with it. I carried a room last year with the bass playing through a 5w amp.

Any suggested settings for an "old school" sound?

Regarding your question about the MG-800, there are 2 features that would provide various tonal options for a more "old school" tone. Naturally this depends somewhat on your instrument and cabinet but in general we designed two features into the amp for this reason.
Contour B --- This Slope provides what I would call a more "old school/vintage" response. The B Contour rolls up the low end slightly and tappers the top end and adds a low mid bump to the response (all adjustable by the control). We feel this gives a tweeterless/sealed cab vibe especially if using a passive bass or flat wound strings.
Drive Channel --- This is another option for an "old school" tone. You can set this channel up to run somewhat "clean" (Gain low and Vol higher). This channel has a higher HPF setting which roll UP as you increase the gain control. As well the Channel has a softer top end which works very well for overdrive OR gives you the type of response your looking to achieve.
Now with these 2 features you can also use them together or in various combinations to season a tone to your taste considering your instrument, playing style and cabinet.
Some options:
CLEAN CH with CONTOUR B --- noon to 2 o'clock
DRIVE CH with CONTOUR ---- FLAT
DRIVE CH with CONTOUR B ---- 9 o'clock to noon

All of this with EQ flat before you select any EQ settings.

Others may have specific settings but this is how these 2 features can be used to achieve your desired tonal goals.

Hope this helps.

I am really digging the MG800 and MG212 match up. Fat, Tight, LOUD .
The Tone controls are nearly perfect.
And the match up allows my basses to do what they do.
Last week i wanted a sort of old school sort of thing. used my P bass with Flats. Using the CONTOUR B helps. 9 to 12 o'clock gets me to where i want to be. Its NOT muddy at all..
The cab now broken is has a nice low extension..
You Can add 100% of Contour . But even if I do, it still sounds good..
It's really hard to get a bad sound with this combination.

I played my parts jazz bass yesterday thru the same rig. Its a 1971 P bass "A" size ( so its like a jazz neck) maple neck on a custom made and rare Philip Kubicki Jazz body that he made for me in the mid 1980s. Nord Jazz Pickups, traditional fender bridge and 100% passive with DR one week old high beams..
All controls on the Mg800 at 12 o'clock high with bass control at 1 o'clock. and CONTOUR "A" at 9 to 10 o'clock. Quite possibly the nicest J bass sound that i have ever had.
Bass had a sort of active sound without the little weird things that many onboard preamps can do..

@JLY
I owned 3 for a while and even gigged it that way for a while. Absolute tremendous sound in a very large setting. Honestly though, I tried 2 in the same gigs and would walk out with my wireless and couldn't tell much if any difference. These cabinets are simply huge sounding whether you use 1,2, or 3. Completely took my amp gas away. Well except for the Array 210-3's lol.

Camp-i have you to thank for my MG800!

I feel a bit like the Fiesta Redheaded stepchild here with no Genzler cabs, but I'm still in love with my MG800 / Baer ML112 (x2) rig. It has been 11 months of sonic bliss, with no plans to change a thing for the foreseeable future. It is an awesome pairing :bassist:

I could see myself being very happy with that rig. I loved my ML115. The tone is definitely in that same ballpark as my Array stack, especially when it comes to the extended, but tight, low end.

Oh, and the build quality on Rogers's cabs is top notch as well.

I've played this rig. The bass is the only P I've ever liked. The amp is amazing and even though they aren't 12-3 cabs, it sounds pretty darn nice.

I don't need a new amp - at all as I'm all IEM these days - but I've thought about it for my home practice amp. Maybe one of those new combos...

Gigged my new 12-3 last night without PA support. Powered it with my now repaired Shuttle 9.0, thanks @agehorse, and man the 12-3 just killed. The venue is just a BBQ restaurant/bar. Small stage that my 8 piece Motown/Soul band barely fits on. 60-70 people make for a packed house so it's not big. Anyway the 12-3 really is an amazing little cab and I was able to carry the room without PA support. Nice. Big lows, that still surprise me for such a small cab, and very present and pleasant mids. Also a nice clean top end. When I went up the neck I was able to hear all my notes whereas with my NV215 those would tend to get lost. I really can't say enough good things about this cab. So now with the Shuttle 9.0 and a 34 pound cab I got my mini rig of doom.

I've been playing my Genzler 800 and 12-3 Array lately by itself and it is amazing what they out out. If you think your 12-3 is good just wait till you try it with the Genzler 800 head. Best head I've ever had and paired with 1-3 arrays it's pure tonal bliss.
Looking forward to it. I think I'm gonna sell my NV215 which I publicly vowed to never sell and sell off the fEarful 12/6/1 kit I bought about 5 or 6 years ago and never built to fund another 12-3 and the Magellan 800 head. Just gotta get decent pics of it all to post in the classifieds.
