Billy Sheehan tracking bass. Interesting to note.... He tracks in the control room. If he or the producer want him to punch in, it’s done right away to keep the sound consistent and the energy level up. Fast feedback and turnaround.

Why I started playing bass. .... I had been playing guitar for a few months (even put a couple of bands together) and I was approached by the leader of the coolest band in Jr. High School asking if I could replace the bass player they had because he was moving away. I immediately said "Sure." I didn't tell him I didn't own a bass guitar much less a bass amp. The next week was a whirlwind of me finding a bass and amp in time for my first practice with them. Found a bass and amp and faked it well enough to be "in." Played with that band through Jr. High and answered an ad for a pretty good band (with me on bass) when I got to High School. Played with that band for almost two years until it broke up. Not long after that , I wrecked my dads car and had to sell most of my gear to pay for it. No music for a few years until I picked up a 12 string acoustic and started fooling around on that. Got pretty good and somebody gave me a 6 st. elec. Put a band together , upgraded equipment a few times and played the elec. stuff for years. About 18 years ago , a friend that I worked with asked me to play bass in his band. Another mad scramble to get equipment together and I was in. Been playing bass in bands ever since. I find I far prefer bass to guitar in bands. I still pull out the old 12 string from time to time but the rust is obvious these days. Too bad. I got really good on it for quite some time. Never made a dime playing it though. Well , that's not completely true. I've never played a paid gig on the 12 string. I have busked a few times with in while on vacation playing on the Boardwalk in Ocean City Md. and pulled in enough to buy drinks for the night. Hic hic.

I’m going through the same excersise at the moment. It’s so depressing trying to find a suitable new band. If I wanted to play Punk or Death Metal i’d be OK but no thank you. <sigh> Sometimes it gets to be just too difficult!!
I am playing on Sunday afternoon in Alliston Ontario. It’s in a park. I’ll probably get eaten by bugs like last year. I find it hard to drive for two hours to a gig, play the gig and drive another two hours home through Cottage traffic.

So I have another update on the recording thing. I got an email today with all the tracks he's done so far. He is using my tracks on three of the four songs I worked on and he's using my background vocals on the one I did BG vocals for. He is asking me not to quit because he wants to hear what I can do on the rest of these tracks. It's like it's no big deal that I couldn't nail the one track.
Honestly, I don't know what to say. I haven't responded because I've been wanting to sit on this. I still have options:
- I can offer again to bring my e-drummer friend in to spruce up that funky track and give me something to lock in with. As a team, he and I never fail to get something good going.
- I can just try working with the other tracks and see what happens.
- I can stick to my guns and just stay out of the project.
The guy has been super nice, I know he needs more vocals too, and maybe I'm just having a crisis of confidence where one is not warranted. Ugh, it's just not easy.

Unless it's a really long drive, I'd be inclined to go with option 2-for now.
I would trust your gut as you originally posted and move on. You owe him nothing. But, I am not you

Time has changed how he feels about the work. That happens.
I was once told by a seasoned studio pro to never say no to any opportunity no matter how small. Meeting people and exchanging contacts is everything. You never know where they may lead in the future. Plus it’s better than sitting at home.
Tell him that you’re been thinking about the track and you really feel hat your drummer on the track will help you nail the song. He can always scrub the drum tracks and substitute something else in post production.
Cost may be an issue. People dynamics might be involved as well. Having a different drummer might put someone else off. Try to work out a deal with your friend to help you nail the track. He might be willing to help you out. You can always pay him what you are making for the track or split the payment. There are ways to move this ahead.
Well, I can do a demo with the drum and bass tracks here, at a cost of nothing except my time and the drummer's time. So there's a relatively easy way to help him decide if that's the direction he wants to go. I'd have to talk drummer into indulging me but he's my buddy and he's always here so probably not too hard.
Sounds like a good plan.
I’d let the producer know what you are planning to keep him in the loop. Communication is important.
